I've always been a shifty guy and had manual transmission but the latest project the 70 rag has a 350/350 combo. i bought the car with no motor but had a spare 70 LT1 laying around and have since then acquired a used turbo 350. also in my scavenging i got a fairbank streetaction torque converter. but i can't find any bolts. i'm figuring there must be plenty of torque between the 2 so i'm figuring something from CTC is not recommended. from what i can see in the manuals it show 3 bolts but no measurements or which direction of the bolt. this torque converter has the flanges for 6 bolts.
on another note i was in a friends shop this morning bench racing as always, when a friend of mine who is doing the body work on anothers friends 67 beaumont mentioned that he had heard about this great web site called Canadian Poncho. should have seen his eyes bug out when i open my coat and i was wearing my favorite white CP T-shirt
The bolts go in from the flex plate side . It has been a while for me to but I think they are 3/8 or 7/16. Any auto parts store will have them. Also, make sure you use some lock tite on these
thanxs for the bolt direction. I'll take the flex plate and torque converter with me tomorrow to napa. no tranny shops in town and i'm not to sure about the local gm dealer. last time i was there the young girl said they had nothing on their computer for pontiacs before 78. one answer i got today was minimum grade eight and fine thread and oh ya to lock-tite. because its an aftermarket converter it will need 2 different lengths in bolt. the secondary tabs are 1/4" thick.
local gm notta. all he could find was something that screwed into the converter. local napa cross referenced some aftermarket catalogue and said 3 - 3/8, fine thread, grade 8, 1 inch long, 3 same but 3/4 long plus 6 star washers and grade 8 nuts. ordered from the local bolt place CCS. will have in my hot sweaty hands tomorrow.
The proper bolts from GM are 3987930 but these are for the converter with threaded nuts built onto the convertor. There seems to be some discontent with GM dealers, what do you think Elroy, should i start a site for genuine GM parts, its amazing what is still available from the big guy, just have to find the right guy.
