Hillar never married. His parents are both alive and he has a sister, brother-in-law nieces and nephew.

Hillar was never alone at special occassions, he spent Christmas at this sister's place and visited with his parents all the time. He had a wide circle of friends here in Toronto and in the USA. He spoke about retiring to BC, as he has a place in Revelstoke, he was an avid skier too.

My wife just mentioned him coming to our cottage and what a decent man he was. Hillar, Mary and I all went to the same high school too. As I mentioned he was at our home for dinner on December 30th and I might add we polished off a bottle of Glenfiddich while we chatted and laughed in front of the fireplace. Mary just watched and shook her head as we drank and gabbed all night. My last memory of him is a happy one.

Great to finally have a site devoted to our special cars, definitely the most well known and the most interesting of the Canadian produced makes.

I have a 70 Laurentian 2 door with a 454 and not much else.toocool.gif

So what the heck is a whiteboard any way?

It would be great if we could put together a window decal to display on our cars - might cause other Canadian Poncho fanatics to ID themselves and come forward when they see it.  Should have the web site address on it, anyone got any ideas for a logo?

This is devastating news. My condolences to Hillar's family and friends. I never met Hillar personally but I felt I knew him at least a little from this site. His comments on the deeper issues we sometimes discussed here were always thoughtful and thought provoking. He will be missed here.

Life is Short - don't waste it.

I haven't been on here much the last couple of days as I found out late Sunday night that a good friend of mine from one of the other car boards I frequent had passed away.

Al had worked in the plant at GM Oshawa for 30 years and had just retired this spring. I had some spirited debates with Al as we were often at opposite ends of the political spectrum (he was a strong CAW supporter but also a very educated and wordly kind of guy) but it was always civil and there were never any hard feelings and the evening usually ended with hoisting a beer.  One thing we did share was our passion for Camaros (we both have 4th gens) and everything GM.  Al was a great source of info on the upcoming 5th gen, the progress of the plant change over, etc.  He also got me some of those small square GM emblems that adorn the lower front fenders of all the current models.  I may put them on the Laurentian.  I think they look cool and remind of the era when GM truly meant: "The Mark of Excellence".  Al was extremely proud of the fact that Oshawa consistently rated amongst the top plants in North America for quality.  It bodes well for the new Camaro.

He retired at the end of May and was doing what he wanted to and going on road trips with his wife such as Virginia Beach. He even took down his ATV so that he could do the beach. I was totally blown away when I heard of his passing after seven weeks of battling cancer but at least he went quick and didn't linger on for a couple of years and lose the battle while losing his quality of life. He was a great husband, father and friend and he will be missed. The line up to see him at the service yesterday was almost out the door so it shows what people thought of him.

I was hoping Al would stay at GM to help build my new Camaro and arrange for me to see it being built, which he graciously offered to do, but when he decided to retire and spend the time with his family and doing things he enjoyed, everyone supported that decision. It is so sad that he was only able to enjoy a few months of it.

He was diagnosed with esophagus cancer at the end of July and only received his first round of chemo 2 weeks ago before they realized that it was all the way down to his liver. I guess he wanted no one to know what he was going through. Only 7 short weeks from detection to strip a man of his life.  He was only 52. cry

I guess all of this is a long winded way of saying life can be short and brutally unfair, so make sure you get out and enjoy it while you can and don't let stupid things and silly arguments get in the way of that.

My sincere condolences Hillar.

The true testament to a man's life is not how much he loves, but rather how much he is loved by others. Al was clearly well loved.

When I heard the news earlier about Hillar's passing I was in complete shock. I couldn't think straight this afternoon. I wouldn't of known until now except a member sent me an email via the "Contact Us" form on the main site. He was a great fellow and I was happy to have known him for this short time.  Cars were his passion. He always had his hands full at the swap meets! The last I talked to him in person was at the Tillsonburg swap meet. He had two bags in each hand full of swap meet finds. This is a very sad day. no

I never had a chance to meet him, I was thinking that I'd be able to maybe this summer. I wanted to show him my 67, but as these things come to pass, it's poor policy waiting too long to do the things we'd like, and see the people we've been meaning to. Life is fleeting as we're so often reminded.
My condolences to Hillar's family and close friends here on Cp.

Ditto to the above.  Although I didn't know him, for those of you that did know him I'm sorry for your loss as he certainly sounds like "one of the good guys"    (Please PM me with the number.)

Hillar's last post   (Best auto buys of 2009)

From a parts perspective, I guess it would have to be this near mint bumper that I picked up for $30.  And it helps if you have multiple cars that it will fit.  But from an overall perspective it would have to be the 2+2 I got from seventy2plus2, besides, Clint was starting to monopolize the supply of 70s, I had to even things out a little bit!
