I have now had a chance to speak with Hillar's friend and partner at the Pilot. Al and his wife actually went to Hillar's home on Monday at about 10 pm. Papers and mail at the front door, lights on, cars parked. Al's wife tried the front door and it opened. Al looked around then went upstairs and made the aweful discovery. What a shock for them.

We have been exchanging stories about all the good times we enjoyed with Hillar, it seems to be a comfort to do that.

How ironic that he is gone on the second Anniversary of the site he was so instrumental in growing with his knowledge and support. When ever we would head out to a cruise or car event he'd say "Got your CP Business Cards with you?" We would get there and start spreading the cards about and inevitably we'd meet one of guys from on Board. Hillar had the distinction of being one of the leaders in actually meeting in person guys on board. We counted one time and it was over thirty.

For me this whole thing seems unbelievable. I can't even imagine what it must be like for those of you who know him on a personal level and have to deal with his sudden end.

I'll tell you Carl, having this happen makes you stare your own mortality straight in the face. I suppose as we age this sort of thing is bound to happen, we don't think of ourselves as old but there it is. It is a comfort to have such caring people around you at a time like this, both those you can speak with and hug and folks like you and others here who although far away in miles are right beside us. We are all connected and blessed and it seems moreso in times of sorrow.

I've been away from the site a lot over the past month or so and was simply stunned when I signed on today and read the terrible news about Hillar!.

Sincere prayers and condolences to Hillar's family also those close to him who've lost their friend..

I always enjoyed Hillar's knowledge and comments shared on the site and the loss to the Canadian Poncho community will surely be felt by all here..

Please count me in on any tributes/worthy causes in memory of our friend Hillar..

Thanks to Carl for making the arrangements. My apologies guys I have been a little preoccupied at work too. We have an office in Haiti and our people are not accounted for so this has not been a good week for me at all. On the good news side we have made contact with the House of Hope Orphanage we fund in Haiti and remarkably all 200 children and staff are safe.

Hillar's sister contacted me and arrangements have been changed due to the overwhelming outpouring. I am just making sure everyone has up to date information. Newbigging is still handling the tributes and other arrangements.

The service has been changed as follows:

Saturday, 11am.
St. Peter's Estonian Evangelical Lutheran Church
817 Mt. Pleasant Road (at Roehampton)

Reception to follow at:

Estonian House (between Danforth and Pottery Rd.)
958 Broadview Avenue
East York, ON M4K 2R6
(416) 466-8906

I just noticed this, what a shock, such a vibrant man, at the peak of life, only 50, he will be missed by all, so sorry to hear about his passing.

Thanks for posting Ray. He was younger than me. Did he have a history of heart trouble?

I don't remember it ever coming up. But how does one talk about that? We talked about his hip replacement shortly before and his limp was gone completely. He seemed to be in great health...

To my knowledge and my wife Mary confirms,  Hillar did not have any issues with his heart that we knew of.

There is a book of condolences on-line is you want to post a message:

Good afternoon everyone. We have just returned from the Service and Memorial for Hillar. The service was about one hour long. The church was a beautiful large A frame with majestic teak beams and finishes. The church was overcrowded to the balcony, there had to be in excess of 200 mourners and family.

Following the service we retired to the Estonian House facility for a wonderful meal of snitzel, nice wines, desserts and conversation in remembering Hillar. We were able to meet people from the other aspects of his life and share memories.

Mark and Joyce Hodge (CND2PLS2) attended from Grimsby and joined Mary and me and Darryl Smith (65camino).

Ray and Mark,

Thank you for representing us. You two are the only members I've actually met. I'm sorry that circumstances wouldn't allow me to join in today.

I've been in a funk since we learned, four days ago, of Hillar's passing. What a sad thing that his life was cut so short....not even 51 until next month. And, considering all the other bad news this week from Haiti, and now the loss of yet another Canadian soldier in Afghanistan, it's not hard to understand feeling down.

Hillar certainly appeared to be living life under his own terms, and as an accomplished senior corporate lawyer, he had certainly earned the respect he received from his peers.

It's always difficult to see someone pass before their time. Recognizing his strong interest in 1970 full-size Canadian Pontiacs, I would hope it might be possible to rename the General 65-70 Full Size Forum to Hillar's General 65-70 Full Size Forum. Precedent has been set over at ChevyTalk.org with Doc's 1973-1977 Chevelles.

Todd?

Here's a reminder of his November 2008 Feature Car experience.

Rest in Peace, Hillar.

Bob will apprecaite this, here is the last known photo of Hillar. He is with my son Ryan on Spanbridge, December 30, 2009 for the funeral cortege of Lt. Nuttal. I passed this photo and others along to Hillar's sister and mother and they were very appreciative and both gave me many warm embraces today.

Alas we will be on that bridge again in the coming days.
