Another hero lost - this time RCMP

OTTAWA RCMP Commissioner William Elliott announced at a Thursday evening press conference that RCMP Sgt. Mark Gallagher of Nova Scotia has died in the Haitian earthquake. His body was found in the rubble of his rented home by a Quebec police officer. The body is still trapped in the ruined building, Elliott said.

Supt. Doug Coates, of Ottawa, is still missing, Elliott said, but he is believed to be inside the wreckage of the UN building in the Haitian capital.

Both RCMP officers were reported missing after a deadly earthquake in Haiti.

Unfortunately with 6,000 Canadians in Haiti this will likely be the first of a lot of bad news. I could read you first hand accounts from e-mails from people we have on the ground. It is incomprehensible, God Bless them all.

Two more Canadians were confirmed dead Saturday as a result of the Haitian earthquake, raising this country's death toll in the disaster to eight.

RCMP Supt. Doug Coates's body was found in the rubble of the United Nations headquarters in the capital Port-au-Prince, RCMP Commissioner Bill Elliott said Saturday in Ottawa.

Coates, the senior Mountie in Haiti, was mentoring police officers. RCMP Sgt. Mark Gallagher of Nova Scotia was found dead earlier this week. Elliott called both men heroes.
