RE: Can anyone recommend a trustable/honest mechanic in Mississauga? Plus results

I have a gut feeling he won't take $7000. Unless he knows something we don't from those pics.

Tough to say, The guy told me it would probably cost 1500 not including the windshield to certify it? The windshield would then cost 500 from Apple Autoglass.

I'd phone some other glass places & compare prices if you haven't done that allready. I had a new windshield put in the 64 [ tinted] for $ 345 installed & I supplied the new seal. Check around, don't just take 1st price as "only" price, then if you want Apple to do the job, say look XWZ down the street will do it for X amount of dollars, but I want you to do the job, "match the price"  ???

I had contacted other places, some others wanted around 250-350 like you had said, However, they want the car brought to their shop, meaning another tow.

Unless, I buy the glass, a heater for the garage, and tools and try to do it myself?

It's not hard to change the windshield in these cars. I did my 70 Skylark when I was 18 in my garage with piano wire, gloves and lots of WD40 to soften the urethane and a friend to help.

You'll want a warm garage for sure though!

Mike, here's some pics. of what I'm into if you didn't see them in other section. I'm having to "fix" previous owners start on mounting body to chassis as well as replacing the floor pans!!  It's not a "quick" job. hours & hours of cutting & fitting before I can even get the MIG welder going!!!  Thought you might like to see what's "involved" As you can see there's nothing left of interior, had to strip it right out, if not you have a FIRE HAZZARD when cutting out old parts & welding.  Pete

See I don't mind stripping the interior. Its just who can I get to do the body work? or how much hours is involved to ship it out?
What about whats underneath? I know the hole is near a brake line, I believe. Does it have to be taken out if you are going to weld?

If your carefull, you can do it, before welding, I would use another piece of metal to put over line as a "shield" to protect it from welder. If it's one of the lines in picture ,they look "pretty bad " & that could turn into a can of worms, as you may have to take them all off & start "fresh" frt. to back, then you get into trying to get them out of whl. cyl. which might mean replacing those as well, can you see how this can "snowball" that's why a shop can't quote a price ahead of time other than a "ball park" figure & then call you as things "develope"  Rust is a killer when trying to price out a job, what you think will be a hour or two, can turn into 4 or 5hrs. to do the same job!! as more needs to be replaced or things "snap off" as you try to loosen things off.

okay, I am going to try and focus one thing at a time.

Questions
Do I need a steering wheel puller to remove the steering wheel?
I want to remove it because I have a feeling it is the turn cancel cam that is broken and want to take a look.
If I buy a jack and stands.
Is it easy to do brake lines? Do I buy a bunch and work one line at a time, copying the old ones? buy a flair set as well.

Mike, yes you need a puller. Is the ign. switch on the column on that buick or on the dash?? asking this as once you get the wheel off you'll have to deal with lock plate if it has one & they can be a "pain" In regards to brake lines, NO they are not easy, unless you get lucky, & they come undone & I doubt it, you will need cutters, to cut line off flush with whatever the fitting screws into, torches to heat up fitting to get it loose, brake line in bulk [roll ] fittings, double flare tool, & tube bender + 6 point sockets so you don't "strip" fitting when trying to get them out. You may be able to buy ready made lines but I usually find they are either too long or too short for where you need them & end up re-fitting the ends or have to make up one from the roll. You have to double flare all b/line fittings by law, if not, your asking for BRAKE FAILURE This is not something for a novice to do 1st. time without someone who knows what their doing, there with you, then you'll have to bleed the system & this is where the bleeders usually break off in the whl.cyl. even if you "heat them" If this happens now your into "pullin" the wheels & replacing the whl. cyl. As I said before, see how this can "snowball" into a major time consuming & extra costs job!!!!

Ive been reading this and I must say it shure is easy to see why im getting so busy! There are just to many crooks out there! it $96.05 for a saftey inspection at my shop that includes taxes. Im pretty shure $1000 for labour could go pretty far it looks like something I could take on. The holes are minor issues, as for the other issues im shure a little tinkering you can fix most of the electrical problems your self, alot of time on old cars that have been sitting its just a matter of cleaning up conection and contacts. We even got the seat, windows, and power top working on Earls 66 with some messing around.(no new parts). Im shure you can get all the parts you need for this by just asking around talk to Todd he is really good at finding parts. I there is anything i can do let me know!

Tiny - I don't mind paying 1000 or even 1500 to get this certified so I can drive it on the road for this summer. But I don't trust giving it to these guys, the way the treated me.
Is there any cheap Tow trucks around to get it to your shop?

Brian - yousent me a PM before, let me know how much you charge for the tow, if you are reading this otherwise I will PM you.

Well if you can get it to the shop id love to help you out. Bidwells Towing in Ingersoll is very reasonable, give them a call(519)485-4705 ask for Brad Bidwell tell him Tiny told you to give him a call. Im shure he will be cheaper then the towing companys from TO area. Call me at the shop is you have any questions (519)425-0033 ask for Tiny.

Thanks guys I pide myself with the fact im honest! I just really love cars so for me its like people are paying me for my hobbie, now I cant say I love every thing I work on but mini vans and drivers pay the bills, Are sales are up 128% over last year this time this speaks volumes about our shop. I go the extra mile to make things right and Im not affraid to admit a mistake Todd can vouch for that when he was my boss I went and told him every time I made a mistake never tried to hide ****! just comes back to haunt you later.

okay, Tiny, I will see what i can do, but will let you know.

Here is a very quick video of the car running and body, was quick because it was my first video, plus running out of gas.

I can take a more detailed video of the problem areas if you would like.
Let me know your opinions.

Thanks, Mike

that car looks like its in great shape!! Your interior is awesome. I say take the seats and carpet out, and if the carpet is fine then be carefull taking it out. Take some good pics of the floor and clean it with a wire brush, like the ones you use on a bar-b-que, just to make it easier to see any holes or thin areas. Now im not an expert here whatsoever, thats why im on this site!!, but if the next time im going thru mississauga i will pm you and i'll try to come have a look. Your best bet would be to get it to Tinys. Do you have any friends that have a truck? If so you can rent a uhaul car carrier. Should be cheaper than a tow.

Mike if you can get your car to Ingersoll I guarantee Tiny will treat you right. A lot of the local car dealers send cars to the Toronto Auto Auction so you may be able to get Bidwells to tow it back if they have an empty truck. Bring all your paperwork (ownership & current insurance slip)and get the Safety Check done by Tiny, then get plates put on here in Ingersoll and drive that Buckeye home. There is a glass shop in London called Low Price Auto Glass that will come to Tiny's shop and do the windshield for probably less than anyone else.
