Ways to find unmolested rare hidden Ponchos ?

A friend called and said there was a car on e-bay, that was "like the car" we worshiped in 1966-67...   A white 2 door Pontiac Strato Chief, with big block, in Moncton N.B.    I flew down, and met Andy MacDonald (car crazy)  and he took me to a little cement floored barn, up on Lutes Mountain, above Magnetic Hill (tourist attraction)
*The car was ordered as a race car in 1966.. It was ordered new with 6cyl and powerglide..  A L72 427-425 crate motor, was added new with a 400 turbo..  It was raced in the Maritimes, and Eastern States as "the Bordertown Bandit"  The car was never beat in competition, and retired in 1968, when it was not allowed to run NHRA classes. (as it was a Cdn Pontiac w/Chevy Power)... Car was stored with 700 actual miles til 2004   Car is unrestored, with all matching numbers, except for upgraded L72 and trans... I have added "new" Muncie 4 speed ...

I have a 1964 Pontiac 4-door hardtop with 37,000 original miles, 283 auto, the owner died, it has the chrome removed and some primer on it, very original other than the work mentioned. My friend told me it was there, I went to the estate garage sale and made an offer, they called me back after a couple months

How I found my Acadian. On my way to work I used to see a 1966 Acadian Canso SD sitting in the backyard behind a house (only showed up in the summer months). An ad appeasred in the old tri-ad in the fall of 1996 and it was this car for sale, a roller at best, with an asking price of $3500. It had been last licensed in 1973 and the owner( #6 ) would keep it in his garage in winter and roll it out in the summer. I did some haggling and bought it in December of 1996 for $1800 including a lot of parts from another 66 Canso SD. I sold a lot of Acadian parts back then and probably got all the money back! So after a lot of $$$$$$ and a build of more than 7 years I now got what I got!

I FOUND MY '64 LAURENTIAN IN THE CALGARY BARGAIN FINDER. I WAS SEARCHING FOR A '65-'69 2DR SEDAN CP OR CHEV. THE AD WAS SHORT AND SOME-WHAT VAGUE, SOMETHING LIKE "1964 PONTIAC SEDAN LOW MILES PARKED 25 YEARS". I HAD NOTICED THE AD AND DISMISSED IT THINKING IT WOULD BE A 4DR AND IT WAS NOT THE RIGHT YEAR ANYWAY. WEEKS GO BY AND THE AD IS STILL LISTED. I GOT CURIOUS AND PHONED. CAR WAS A 2DR. HAD BEEN PARKED ON BLOCKS IN A SHED SINCE 1972, HAD 28,000 MILES ON IT AND HAD LITTLE IF ANY RUST. THE OLD FELLOW WAS SELLING THE FAMILY FARM AND HAD TO GET RID OF IT(AND A COUPLE OF MINT COND. STEEL WHEELED TRACTORS!!!). IT HAD BEEN HIS FATHERS CAR. TOLD ME IF IT WASN'T GONE BY THE WEEKEND IT WOULD BE SCRAPPED. I WENT AFTER WORK TO SEE IT. WE AGREED ON A PRICEbiggrin. I TRIED TO GIVE HIM SOME MONEY TO HOLD IT UNTIL THE WEEKEND. HE WOULDN'T TAKE ANY MONEY AT THAT POINT. THEN ASKED IF I WAS A FARMERconfuse. I TOLD HIM NO. HE SHOT OUT HIS HAND AND SAID "THIS IS HOW US FARMERS MAKE DEALS" AND SHOOK MY HAND, TOLD ME HE WOULD SEE ME ON THE WEEKEND. I WAS BACK ON THE WEEKEND WITH MONEY, TRUCK AND TRAILER TO PICK IT UP. AFTER ALOT OF SCRUBBING AND A BIT OF PAINT/DYE I THINK IT CLEANED UP QUITE WELL. WOULD STILL RATHER HAVE A '65-'69 THOUGH...blankstare021 (2).JPG

I found my 64 Catalina thru a friend of mine. He knew of the car & possibly for sale!! We tracked it down in Brooklin Ont. Was buried in the garage, came back on weekend & he had the garage cleaned out around it. Ended up on the trailer, then I found out he bought it from one of the guys in my car club & he had it for 7 yrs. in storage [never knew he had it ] turns out it had been stored for 12 yrs between the 2 owners, broke a piston on start up, & had to do complete rebuild & thats when I upgraded to turbo 350 trans at the same time engine was out. Solid South Carolina car w/47000 mi. on it when I got it in 2001, has 70,000 on it now.

this not my storey but I heard it

About twenty years ago there was a one owner 1967 Beaumont Sport Deluxe 396 4-speed in a barn in rural Port Colborne, Ontario still owned by the original owner, someone was talking about it and its price at a bar and a bystander told the people talking about it the he would be interested and offered $500 for its location if he purchased it ! I was told several weeks later they took this guy to the location blindfolded so he wouldn't know where to find it or tell anyone where it was if he didn't buy it on the spot !

well-its RRSP season-great time to invest in a car, and a great time to tell someone how much that $8000 will get them back on their income tax return and how much it'll grow to by the time they retire.

Should I get my blindfold ready ?

I will try him again soon, the problem is he doesn't need the money. I crawled under this car 2 years ago, even though it only has 39,000 miles the exhaust has rotted away but the floors and undercarriage are still wet with undercoat. It would need a repaint as the paint has faded, a trunk lid as it had been hit and a less than professional repair was done, cracked windshield, tires, go over all the mechanicals, fuel & brakes, maybe do the heads for unleaded gas. All trim and chrome is showroom condition. I figured it would be at least $10,000 plus the purchase to make it right again!

I know of another 66 Acadian Canso, an SD stored in a barn, probably hasn't saw daylight in 15 years. Owner has been approached and has visions of restoration. Sold this fellow parts for his car over 12 years ago. I have also located a 1965 Beaumont Custom wagon, V8, stick car needing a frame and complete resto. Black on Black, family 1 owner . Also has been
approached to purchase. These cars are still around but sometimes money won't buy them due to sentimental values.
Off the subject a little (not a Pontiac) but I have also located a 1966 chevy 11 L79 2 door sedan that was around in Owen Sound when I had mine back in the late sixties. No motor or trans but the 12 bolt is still there, car is complete other than that, will need a complete restoration. This car was similar to mine ,both L79 2 doors, 4 speeds, mine had 4:56 gears this one 3:73's. Mine was Marina blue, this one was Madeira Maroon. Ran him at the lights one night for about 3 blocks had him by 3-4 car lengths, gears did it! I tried to purchase it "but not for sale" I contacted the original owner to verify this car and it is his old car, he also tried to buy it but was swore at and told not to return! The original owner sold this car to this guy. He still has some documentation for this vehicle. There were very few of these built and to have 2 of them in a town of less than 20,000 people kind of boggles the mind. I would like to purchase all of these gems and restore them, the only thing holding me back is $$$$$ and the willingness of the owners to part with them.
