Manitoba Cetificate of Inspection ( Safety)

Last night at the MB Canadian Poncho coffe night the subject of having to re safety our cars if the registration lapses came up. Seems there's a rumour going around that may be Autopac's new policy. Now from what I can find on their website nothing has changed. A COI is only required when a change of ownership occurs, as it shows on our registrations " A Certificate of Inspection is required to be registered by a New owner". Beaumont Guru was going down to an agent today to see what's going on, so we'll see if anything has changed that they haven't updated on their website.

Thanks for doing that Dano. I was going to post about this but work has been interfering with CP this morning.

A friend of mine [yes I do have some] told me that when he was renewing his plates last summer, the guy ahead of him was having problems, seems he took the car off the road for 2 yrs, they informed him he was "supposed" to turn the plates in, he didn't & they were going to charge him 2 yrs. back reg. fees, saying " how do we know you haven't been driving it this long & never got caught" Then they started on about "maybe having to get it inspected again" Since Ontario privatized the lic. offices it's getting worse everytime you go in!!!!!

Went to autopac.   The ladies there did not know anything about it, and are assuming it is just a nasty rumor.

She will phone me back tommorrow after she does some searching.
I will keep you all posted.

Its all OK,  Heard back from autopac today.  This is NOT true.

As long as you have always owned the vehicle, you are OK.

Only need a safety when the vehicle changes owners.

Whew!  what a relief!

You can also 'gift' a car to an immediate family member and not need a safety...

I'm glad it was only a rumour. Better to check it out and be safe than find out too late.
