I was flippin through channels on Saturday and caught the show Musclecars and they are starting a project car like this.
I dont know if the episode is older and a repeat but the premise of the show was to do a budget car build and find something cheap to start with. I believe the goal was to build it for 10k.
I think this is the type of car that can be had for a good price and the cross over parts are available/Chevelle. The motor combos are endless,i think they want to go with the 455 route.
This kind of build is realistic and for the younger generation, and the way to get into the hobby becuse all the popular stuff is out of reach.
I have a teenage boys and i may consider this approach to get them involved one day.

I saw that episode too. I always liked the 73-77 long window Buicks. A very very tough project however. You need to know your interchange parts cold because not very much available on these. There are a few examples of $100,000 restorations on cars in this era that can't fetch $30,000 when done.

I have to say I'm 52 and this is my era so I can't imagine a teenager giving this a second look, just my opinion. confuse

Years ago I pulled the Stage 1 out of a 73 or 74 (I forget) GS in a wrecking yard near here. In hindsight, that car should have been saved.

Another one of those stupid, no foresight moves...

Carl, at least you have been fortunate enough to be one of the few people who has actually seen these rare cars, plus it makes for a good story now. Don't be too hard on yourself.

My mother called me one day about 20 years ago and said that did I want this old box she found in the basement because she was throwing it out. Well I went over and it was a large box full of hockey cards, lucky I did because in that box were two Bobby Orr Rookie Cards and sets of others form 1957 to 1968. That box is insured for $30,000 today! Looked like garbage, was garbage to most people.

Some days I get frustrated at the lack of foresight on my part with these cars. I had perfect opportunity to get in on the ground floor and only took advantage of it a small number of times.  Many times I used money as an excuse yet really the prices were often so good it really was a non issue.

All I can say to guys looking at rare cars these days is "if it seems like a great deal, don't be shy".

I bet you could have a decent car for a 10k investment if you could do most of the work yourself and if the underneath is solid. I bet southern bumpers etc are dirt cheap for this car. Even a smogger 455 would liven this car up. There's not many cars out there with buckets and console, rally wheels and stripes that arent parts cars for $1400. You'd be the only one at cruise night with one of these!

winkYeah Todd i think we have the same thoughts on this one. I always look at the car for parts interchange and the structure/floors/body for a possible canidate.
These cars are around and this is a great way to get into the hobby.
Ray mentioned that maybe a teenager might not like it but i do believe some would. My boys and there friends 15-16 are really catching on to the older stuff because of the style.
Some of the kids that come here look at the old car mags that i have and comment on the stuff that is out of the mainstream.
I am trying to let them know that Hondas are ok for A-B but older north american iron is were its at.
I guess i am trying to show some of the yonger generation that getting dirty and working on something is fun and rewarding.
I have a sticker on my cabinet that says ,Its what you build not what you buy.

Would you please check out the frame & floors before Todd and I can't resist the urge to drive down and look at it? Man, is that cheap for mid 70's GM not so "muscle" cars if it's not rusted out!

These cars have very "swooped" body lines that hard to find in straight enough panels that it will look good in black. As this car is original paint, or partially repainted it's pretty straight.

Had a quick look at it this morning on the way into work. Didn`t check under because of all the snow but I seen enough rust on the lower body. Every thing can be fixed but to far gone for me. Derby car, hell ya!

1974 Buick Skylark Gran Sport 455

I agree with you Ray, I would love to have this car for $9000 instead. Nothing better for this car than the 455 power plant (hopefully the original block) and a lot less work and looks to be in great shape. It looks like all it would need is to spend some TLC underneath cleaning it up to turn it into a nice driver show car. Interior is in fantastic shape.
