The shifter in my 1967 Firebird was very sloppy, so I ordered a new Husrt 4 Speed shifter. I cannot get the new shifter to bolt up to the transmission. The existing factory original shifter bolts to an adapter plate then the adapter plate bolts to the transmission. The new shifter will not fit either directly onto the transmission nor onto the old adapter plate. None of the bolt holes are even close to lining up. Does anybody have any any ideas? I am told I have the right shifter. I am also told that I should not need an adapter plate. Am I missing something? Is there such as thing as an adapter plate for the new shifter that might be missing? Any help is appreciated....Thanks
You generally do need an adapter plate to bolt on a Hurst to a Muncie. There are however different tailhousings for the muncies. There is an oddball tailhousing that does not work with the Hurst shifters. I learned this because I had one....
I'll see if I have it around still, may be able to post pics of the two styles. No idea what they are from.

I know certain GTO's and other 67 Pontiac's that had a different 4 speed from the factory due to a shortage or strike or some other snafu that year. Some even had FoMoCo on them.
Carl......that is the shifter I bought and I'm 99% sure my tranny is the original Muncie with the muncie shifter, so I guess I need to buy the Hurst installaton kit.
Thanks for the help guys.........I probably should, have got on here first rather than trying to deal with a sales rep who knew nothing or just called Hurst directly. ......although I was asking for an adapter kit and not an installation kit, so maybe I can give him the benefit of the doubt

the handle that should be supplied, and is correct for your firebird is part # 538 4106.
10" tall 5 1/2" rake to the back 1 1/2" offset to the driver
I can scan the pic if there are any questions....
Thanks..I'll check those measurements against what I have tonite, but I think I have the right handle. It all seemed to be the right shape and size. I just could not get it to bolt up because the bolt holes would not line up. I am checking into the installation kit today.
If you have the original shifter that came with the car Send it back to Hurst in the States They will Re-Build it like new for about 200us plus shipping Return the New shifter you bought get your money back
I did not know that Hurst would rebuild a factory Muncie shifter or I may have gone that route. Anyway I spent yesterday morning installling the new Hurst shifter complete with the $192.00 install kit that I was missing. Everything is in and it all worked perfectly on the test run. Thanks for the help guys...much appreciated.

thats funny! A rebuilt Muncie shifter, still shifts, like a "new" Muncie shifter, and they were crap
