Finally figured it out!

After all of the questions that I have asked about my 78 Bel Air regarding ignition timming and vacuum advance and just plain lousy running, I have finally figured out why I am having these problems. My fuel filter had clogged on the way home from work and the car would barly run, after getting home and removing the hard line from the carb, I noticed brown fuel was comming from the line, so I cranked the engine over with a water bottle over the end, and what comes out is rusty gas! So yesterday I pulled down the tank(bolts came out so easy thanks to oil spraying) and had a peek inside. Yikes, needless to say it was very rusty in there, so I ordered a new tank and sending unit from carquest and I did not even have to replace the straps, they were mint once again thanks to oil spraying. Do you guys think that the rust would have formed when the car sat in a garage from 1992 to 2008, is gasoline hydroscopic? and do you guys think I should place a inline fuel filter between the tank and pump? Thanks for any info.

Not at first, but after seeing brown gas exit the fuel pump I really started to suspect the fuel tank, especially since the car sat for so long. Do you think that it could cause a wear problem in my carb with all that fine rust particles in the fuel?

Do they have electric fuel pumps ? Just wondering my 78 Monza did.  If it does good time to replace it as its in the tank.  The inline fuel filter sounds like a good idea.

I think 78 still had the mechanical pump. I had a 78 sport roof Impala and it was. Actually, when I bought it the lady told me it stalled on her a couple times. I got it home and took out the filter from the carb and man did that thing go. Couldn't even blow through the filter. Ran fine after that.

I don't think I'd be concerned with the rest but an inline between the pump and carb may be a good idea. Make sure it's a metal one and make sure you use good clamps if you put on there.

Yeah I was thinking the same thing, a metal one would be safer from road debris, unlike those clear plastic ones, thanks for the info!

Even more dangerous on the plastic ones is the cracking at the seam. I've seen a number of engine fires because of that.
