Please help me! Pontoiav Parisienne 1969, straight six


hello

I need Your help. For You maybe a simple thing, for me, living in the Philippines with my Pontiac Parisienne, a big problem.

1. We have to adjust the whole ignition. Dwell/Cam Angle. What's Your recommendation? how many degrees from OT?

2. We have to adjust the Valves. Do You have any datas?

Our mechanics in Bohol have no knowledge; even me!

If You have datas, please mension, if they are in inch or mm.

For a 1969 230-250ci six.

Spark plug type
AC-R46N
Gap .035


Points Dwell
31-34 Degrees.

Ignition TimingWith Distributor Vacuum line disconnected and plugged
TDC for Manual Transmission
4 Degrees BTDC for Automatic

Idle RPM
700 with manual transmission
550 with Automatic

Valve lash
One turn down from zero lash

Here's what I come up with in " MOTOR AUTO REPAIR MANUAL" Point gap 019" for new points or 016" for used points Dwell 31 to 34 on meter Timing 0 to 4 deg with vac. advance "disconnected" & vac source plugged off. Valve adjustment, back rocker off till lifter "clatters" then turn till 0 lash [no noise] then 1 full turn "slowly" pausing to let things settle out, then turn some more till you get to 1 full turn. I sometimes find that 3/4 of a turn is best for me but you can try whatever works for you??? Spark Plug gap is 035" if you need that as well, hope this helps you out!!!!

That's I call "helping".

Thank You very much. I'll print it out, then together with the philippino-mechanik, we will do our best! 
Some pictures will be made.

I hope, that with all of this adjustments my engine-temperature will go down. it's always a little bit high. of course, we have 35 degrees C, plus the asphalt-road. a problem is also the lower speed in phils. gear 3, normal speed 6okm/h! then i have to go down to gear 2!

I use already a coolant; radiotor is overhauled.




I detached already the aircon-radiotor. (anyway, aircon makes me sick and i hate it! ). since the engine-radiotor is no more covered, it's already better.

It's really rather novel for me to think we're helping a fellow CP'er so far away!


Overheating, some thoughts...

Excessive ignition advance can bring the temperature up.

So you removed the all the AC stuff including the Condenser in front of the rad.
Did you also remove the aftermarket electric fan?

You obviously like silver paint! Brass rad fins and tanks painted silver will not transfer heat as well as those painted black.

I see you have installed a overflow bottle. Good.

You say the rad is overhauled. Good.

Is your coolant mixed 50/50 with a top quality anti freeze?

Is you rad cap good, does it hold the correct pressure? A cap that does not hold pressure can cause overheating.

How is the condition of the thermostat? If you're running hot, you're climate is warm enough that you could temporarily remove it to see if it makes any difference. If not, re-install it. If yes, replace it.

Water pump. A old, original pump could have a reduced flow. If original, you could try replacing it.

The engine block. Deposits in the block could reduce heat transfer to the coolant. A good flush might help.

Perhaps some CP'ers with top knowledge in cooling could chime in here...

hi mark

thanks for all Your ideas about overheating.

-there was no original AC in my parisienne. they used a mitsubishi. I removed everything. last years it wasn't working, according the previous owner. now, no more connection to c-rad, or elsewhere.

-silverpaint: bingo! it was my wish, to have it silver! seams, it's wrong. I'll clean and let it black again!!!

-as I said, radiator is overhault. about engineblock??? i don't think so. maybe it's full of chalk. i had experience with another car in the phils. I'll try with vinegar (we don't have other chemicals here in the province). 50% vinegar, 50% water. short time hot, then a few hours befor remove. i hope, it will be ok.

-in the philippines, all thermostats are removed! even new cars are delivered wihtout. i checked it already: no thermostat.

-I used COOLANT, but not yet 50%. maybe I encrease now.

-waterpump:  avisual-check was ok. the temp is immediately going down, wehne i change the gear. even, when the road is flat, or down, its getting colder. looks now more an more, that the ignition is a main point. also the permanent low speed, no cooling from the airtemp. outside is suspected.  our asphalt has about 80 degrees C! plus 35 outside-temp; and then LOW RPM.

I will follow Your advises. maybe it's also like a puzzle. a little bit here, a little bit there.

You know, I'm a retired Expat from Switzerland. have only a pension, not so high. that's why, I have to budget much more, then in my active-life befor. I hope You understand.

A puzzle is a good way to think of it.
A little here, a little there and you'll eventually get her right.

I think with the correct timing, a 50/50 mix combined with a good flush she'll eventually run a little cooler for you.

I want to say that Mark's advice about 3/4 of a turn after quiet for the adjustment. I have been taught over the years that if you go a full turn after the rocker arm is quiet, there is a good chance of burning a valve because that is too tight.

I can tell you Carl I know nothing about setting valve lash on Hydraulic lifters. I was well versed in shimming valve clearances on inline 4 cylinder motorcycle engines way back, but thats it.
The paragraph I scanned was from a 69 Service manual. So your advice from experiance is certainly the one to follow.

Carl, that was me "Pete" that said that, not that I want the credit?? What do you guys think about no T/stat??  I would say the coolant is going through the rad. too fast [no restrictsion to slow it down] I would think a 160 degree T/stat would be better than none!!! & would give the rad a chance to cool it down????

I just came here to post an apology to you Pete for not giving credit to the right person but you beat me to it!

I'm sorry about that. At any rate, it's still good advice, just a poor job of paying attention on my part!

When I was in Grade 10, second day in French class the teacher caught me talking to someone instead of listening (imagine that........) She told me if I didn't want to pay attention I should get out of class. I got up, walked out and changed my course to General Business and never looked back!

I thought the same Pete, It would be worth a try to install a tstat to slow the flow. 
But Hanspeter says the Phillipino cars never came with one.

No more overheating Pontiac Parisienne 69


dear friends in canada

after ll your good and friendly advises now the good news about my parisienne 69:

overheating of engine is now already past!smile

all of your advises implemented, plus correction of the position rad to fan-propeller about 3/4 inch, the temp. dropped now back to normal!

even the reaction by changing rpm, gears, is now ok!

I could check it now during very hot "el nino"-days.

Many thanks for all of You, also for the institution of the canadien-poncho-forum! It's a nice fee;ling, to have good assistance in cases like this. even congrats to the level of this forum! (i have experience in other forums, who are not so effectiv and fair)

by the way: our Pontiac is THE eyecatcher in bohol now! canadiens, americans, chinese, koreans,germans and... are happy to see our beauty! if I would charge 50 cents for 1 photo made by them....!!!! no

I wish you a good time and a lot of fun with your "beloved cars". 

(is it normal, that my girlsfriend is sometimes jealous? "think you love the car more then me")

Hanspeter, That's good news to hear that you got the problem fixed. My wife says almost the same thing as your girlfriend, especially when I've been out in the garage for hours!!!!  Keep us posted to how it's running!!!!!!
