Cleaning oil soaked brake shoes

I've been looking everywhere for new rear shoes for my 59 Dodge and spent $75 for shoes from an Ebay seller only to find out they were wrong (1/4" linings instead of 3/16"). It seems the D500 shoes are unique. The only reason I was going to replace them was the passenger side shoes are soaked with brake fluid. I've done some searching and it seems some guys have good luck using a torch to extract the oil. Anyone try this? Any tips? I have them soaking in degreaser right now.

Thanks
Todd

I've dont the heat thing before - take your time & heat them slowly & wipe them off as soon as the fluid bubbles up ..... but so your aware , the shoes will not last too much longer

use brake clean to clean it and wipe off. Then use heat to what's left

One caution about heating the shoes after cleaning in brake clean: I read somewhere (one of the Chevy message boards I think) that the brake clean, when heated, gives off a very toxic chemical that can make you very sick. Can't vouch for this but as always with chemicals, you need to be very careful.

When I used to repair forklifts we would place the shoes in container of brake cleaner than remove them(overnight) and put into a bucket of absorbal(oil clean up).Worked great everytime.

I agree, this is very toxic, and it doesn't take much either to make you very ill. Buy an issue of Hemmings Motor news and look through the vendors in there. Someone will have the right shoes.

what is a d500? a 1 ton? I have had brake shoes relined for a 47 cornbinder and relined a e-brake shoeset for a 3 ton driveshaft setup.

The D500 was the high performance option on a Dodge car back in the 50's. I'm on a bit of a time line as I may have the car sold and it is going to be shipped to Alberta in a couple of weeks.
I'll try the heat method first and see what happens.

Thanks guys
