Very inspiring.

My boss's dad, far left, WWII Ace as well, "died" on a classified mission over Labrador in 1956

I finally got a chance to see this. Fantastic! These guys are my hero's. I have several books written by WWII pilots.

There is a huge airshow this Aug 7 & 8 in Ypsilanti, Michigan called "Thunder Over Michigan". They will feature the largest gathering of WWII bombers in the world. They will also be offering flights in a B17. It is my dream to go up in one. I'd like to attend.

A super rare German ME-262 will also attend:

WOW! I would go all the way to anywhere to see one of the 262's.  I have had the rare experience of formatting next to a restored B17 over Peace River Alberta in about 1995 on a flight as an Air Attack Officer.  The Confederate Air Force was on a tour with a restored machine headed to Alaska when we happened on it. In our Cessna 310 we flew alongside for as long as we could.  I tell ya its quite the experience when the boys turned the guns in your direction even when they're just kidding!

I'll scan  a photo I took at the time and stick in on here as soon as i can find it.

By the way have you ever seen that scene in Empire of the Sun (Spielberg about 1988) when the P51's are shooting up the airbase next to the internment camp?

One of my favorites all time movie scenes!

Ken, I'd love to see a photo of that B17 you flew alongside! I had a weird experience a few years back. I had a dream I was flying during the war in a B17. It remember feeling damn cold. I also remember the name of the B17. "Scarlett O'Hara". When I woke up I did some searching online. What did I find?

Photogroup 624.jpg

Scarlett O'Hara was shot down during a bombing run on (if I remember correctly) a rubber plant in Germany. My skeptical wife says I probably read about this plane somewhere but I have no memory of it. I do know I've loved the B17 since I was "knee high to a grasshopper". I had a huge model of one when I was a kid.

That Air Show in Ypsilanti sounds like it would be a real treat. I would also love to see all that war tin flying. We lived under one of the flight paths of CFB Shearwater when I was 10. My step dad was an electrician on the base. The sound of the 4 piston engine planes (mostly Argus') overhead is something I will never forget. I joined the Air Cadets at 12 so I could get closer to the old planes. That was in '67 so there was still a fair bit of WW11 birds hanging around. Most had been scrapped by then, but the Grumman Trackers were still in sub chaser duty everyday only now they weren't searching for Germans. Just Russians.

B17.jpgHi, here is the scan of the B17 we flew alongside in our piddley Cessna 310.

Also here is a great clip on YouTube of some of the machines i used to work with as a Bird-dog Officer for the Alberta Forest Service in the mid 90's. (The guy in the Cessna directing the tankers and rotorwings.) Since this was taken in 1991, some of these airplanes burned in a hanger fire, one crashed near Grande Prairie,(pilot walked away) and Tanker 12 has been dontated to a museum in Wetaskiwin.  Makes me feel kinda old and priviledged that i used to get to boss these things around on a forest fire.

I flew in one once on a practice.  What a true hot rod!

I still do this work but it's with turbo prop machines, faster but not nearly as classy!
