Interesting episode at work

This rambling was triggered by the other thread that is discussing the use of abbreviations and horrendous spelling by people.

Last night before I went home I sent a parts order to one of the companies we deal with at work.

I spent a fair bit of time looking at our parts sales history before writing up the order, attempting to order parts that will sell, not just gather dust.

This morning, the sales rep from that company sends me an email. He says that my order is so small, it's a joke.  He is blazing mad at me for wasting his time, basically insulting him with such a little parts order! He goes on to tell me that anyone could have made up that order in 5 minutes. The email is totally rude and the icing on the cake is it contains numerous spelling mistakes!  He tells me that my order doesn't even meet the minimum $ amount required (even though it does) and that if I don't call him by the end of the day, he will cancel our contract with the company blahblah.gif

I love it when a guy makes himself feel better by doing his best to make me feel inferior, and in doing so shows a total lack of professionalism himself!!!

My little rant for today....

I think a lot of spelling mistakes are actually poor typing skills, not that people don't know how to spell. Then when you reread something you have written it is easy to miss the errors because you know what you wanted to write and see what you think you wrote. Most e-mail systems have a spell check feature but often these are not that reliable either. It's hard to find one that checks for Canadian style English too.  Email began as an informal communication tool but now it is the way most business communication transpires so it is important to be accurate, polite and professional.

The best part of all?

My boss is a super nice guy. He wants to be friends with everybody and goes extra miles to make sure that not only customers are happy but everyone he talks to during the work day.

He called this guy up and told him point blank he was rude! He didn't back down either.

Do you know how good it feels as an employee when your employer backs you up so strongly? In polite but firm words, he pretty much told the guy that if things didn't change,  his contract wouldn't be getting a sun tan, if you know what I meanwink

And on the way out chance that the sales rep is a Pontiac nut, and is reading this, please look in the mirror and think about how this makes you look!

I had a guy a couple years go on an e-mail rant.   He wanted to 'no' what was happening, and he was losing his 'patients'.   I think we learned about homonyms in grade 2 or 3.

That sounds like most of our customers at work. Everyone feels like they are entitled. "Fix my car first". "Drop me off at work first and pick me up at exactly 5pm" "Give me a discount" .
Manners have gone the way of the Dodo bird...

Are you sure he wasn't a doctor????!!!!

I am only blessed to be a good speller because both my parents were teachers at some point in their life. Not everyone has the "knack".  Not that I am any smarter than those who don't have it. We each have our talents, every last one of us.

It's SO important to teach our kids to respect and be respectful, and that includes having manners.

Glad your boss backed you up, Carl. Even better would be for him to forward that email to the sales rep's boss, with the lead-in something like "I thought you would like to know how rude one of your sales reps is. I am surprised you do not instill good customer service in your staff. Please notice that the minimum total order cost was in fact met, not as he erroneously states. We have been your customers for _ years, always pay promptly, and endeavor to maintain good relations with our suppliers. Perhaps we should take our business elsewhere. I look forward to hearing from you."

One good thing about rude and obnoxious people using email, it leaves written documented evicence, eh?

Dave

I'm a real stickler for spelling. I usually know while I'm typing if I've made a mistake or not. ( You know, fingers too big!)
In my opinion, there's no excuse for spelling erors. I think it's just plain laziness, and in the business world, it's totally unprofessional. And I NEVER use spellcheck.

As for rude people, I try to treat evryone the way I'd like to be treated, but when someone is rude to me, I've got an extremely short fuse, and usually give much more than I get!

I had to laugh at '66 Grande Guy's posting about "udder failure"; is that the politically correct way of saying something is "t@ts up"? LOL! But really guys, is it not just easier to be pleasant to someone that off the deep end? Last summer I had an incident in that the neighbour's father told me I sprayed his van with grass after I'd cut my lawn and made it seem like I did it on purpose.
I was taught to respect my elders and offered to wash it off for him but he snidely said he'd already done it. When I told MY Dad about it, he told me in a case like that, I should have just let him have it. For crying out loud I'm 50 years old! And anyone that KNOWS me KNOWS of my love of cars my entire life! I don't so much as even wave to the miserable old (sniff) anymore and
should he ever accost me again, the gloves will be off! I've even got the approval OF my neighbours as they emailed an apology to me. It wasn't THEIR duty to do so, but I know exaclty where they're coming from. As Red Green always said, "I'm pullin' for ya; remember, we're all in this together." I of course could go on and on here about rude people and maybe they were just having a bad day; but if you're having a bad day? Keep it to yourself and DON'T project it on other people to somehow make you feel better about yourself and your bad day. You just MIGHT find you've accosted someone who's having a worse day than you and you're on your way for stitches! LOL!

Told her sorry we are really busy and I havn't had a chance to look at it, I call her around 4 and tell her it needs a fuel pump, once I told her we could get it finished by the end of the day but she would need to pay before we worked on it because we had problems getting payed last time! all of a sudden it could wait until next week!LOL also I love it when people try to low ball me I wish I could check out at the grocerie store and the tell the clerk that is to much I want $50 off.

Try it, my mother in law does that everywhere she shops, I'd say 7 out of 10 times she gets something and I mean at stores like the Bay or Metro, She just uses the poor old senior citizen routine. At first I used to be embarrassed but when I saw it working I figured good for her!

My dad was bad for that. I think I got in at the show or fair for "kids rate" up until age 16. My mom would say "Ron! Don't do that! You're embarassing me!" and he would grin at her. The only time I really dicker is when buying a car.
I remember looking at a 71 Skylark when I was about 18. The seller was a big shot at London Life. It was his moms car. He wanted $1000 for it. I offered $400. He said no. I said "Here's my phone number. If you still have it in a week or so my offer still stands." He called me a week later and said "You're a shrewd kid" and I got the car for 400 bucks.

Shrewd and rude are two different things Todd!  Shrewd is a compliment, especially to a kid! Rude? That is not a compliment regardless of age!

I have never seen a lowball offer as being rude unless you have run an ad that specifically states something like "don't waste my time with offers" or something like that.

When I advertised my 66 with the 427 4 speed 20 years ago, I had the ad priced somewhere in the 6 grand range I think. Someone called me from Ottawa and the first thing he said was "would you take 4 grand for the car?"  I said no, and our call was done. That wasn't rude as far as I was concerned. I thought it was a ridiculously low offer but what did it hurt me? I didn't have to say yes, and the whole call took all of 30 seconds of my life, no big deal. That's shrewd. If he had called and told me my car wasn't worth a penny more than 4 grand, without even seeing it, that would be rude!

I had an '88 Monte Carlo for sale in around 1996 and a guy came to look at it and offered me $1,800.00 for it. My reply to him was "And when would you be bringing the rest?" Needless to say
after that, he didn't end up with the car.

Todd, I had one like that when I was Parts Manager at a Toronto Toyota dealer. Walk in customer wanted a price on water pump, looked it up & quoted price, he said "how much for me" I added $10, he asked again, I added another $10, he "freaked" and wanted to know why, I said "you just don't get it do you" show me a garage lic. & tax forms & we can do do garage price, otherwise that's customer pay price. Had he not been such a "dick" the way he asked, I would have given a discount!!!
