70 Trans Am

Any experts here on 2nd gen TAs? I recently bought one and have more than a few technical questions.

All I know is that I had a buddy in high school who had a '70 Formula. Beautiful, beautiful car! Congrats on the purchase.

Thanks!

Finding out quickly there are far fewer repops available for this car but there are more original pieces available if you look hard.

You will want to read this thread, on the Yenko site.
http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/107225/an/0/page/0#Post107225
He bought this car in 2003, and has been restoring it ever since, and has documented everything, with photos! His is a 72, but you couldn't find more accurate information anywhere else in one place. There are 905 posts. It will take you a few days to read, but definitely an epic restoration thread!

Nice Transam ! I love the 1970-74 Ram Air III, IV 400, 455 HO, 455 SD Transam's as well, I missed out on my share of these over the years ...

Fire away with your questions. I'll help any way I can.  I've got some knowledge on the 2nd Gens.

Nice too see a 4 speed. I've had quite a few T/A's over the years but never a 70-73. There is a few very knowledgeable guys that have posted on here that will probably be able to answer your questions.

Ok, so here's what I have as questions so far. The list is pretty extensive so please let me know which number you're replying to if you can...thanks. And thanks, StriperSS, that link is very helpful.

1. Did the nose originally come as plastic/fiberglass instead of metal?
2. How about the front bottom spoiler (valance): plastic/fiberglass or metal?
3. Rally II treatment: I have it as no trim rings, red cap with black PMD lettering and black centred lug nuts..correct?
4. Car was built in Norwood and doesn't have it's original carb. Was that carb number then 7040273?
5. Is the correct battery a R59 Delco with the red caps?
6. Did these cars come also with spring ring battery cables?
7. It currently has a fiberglass hood. Would a 70 through 76 shaker hood (no matter what year in this range) be correct?
8. Any issues with repro hood latches?
9. The front side spoilers (in front of each front wheel) - when they meet with the lower spoiler/valance under the nose, is there a filling material that goes in the gap or is it that further alignment is required to close the gap?
10. The car has a Holley fuel injection system on it instead of a carb. Besides the carb itself, what will I need by way of throttle linkage to convert the car back?
11. The car is also missing the flapper door ($31.00 at Ames). Besides that, there is a solenoid system (2 solenoids) that opens the flapper door when you punch the accelerator. What will I need for that and where can I get a diagram that explains how to hook it up?
12. The shaker scoop has a Ram Air decal on it. I have it that the previous owner who had the car repainted put all the decals from the decal package on the car but I don't think the scoop was supposed to have the Ram Air decal for 70 (only 71 and 72). True?
13. The car does appear low. It does have 225-70R15 BFGs on it, so I'm thinking shocks and/or coils. What first...shocks?
14. The RH tail light looks like it got hit very slightly but enough to put a small crack in it and also dent the tail lamp molding. How's the repro stuff (especially the markings on the lens. Are they "correct"?) or do I need to find NOS?
15. It also has an electric fuel pump. What do you suggest as a mechanical "stock" pump?
16. The glove box door is discoloured and seems to be slightly flaking. What's the material that's on these doors? My 68 simply has paint but this looks to be some sort of covering. How do I repair it?
17. I take it the seat hinges should have covers?
18. Did these cars come with shoulder belts?
19. What is the silver material on the dash made of and how best to clean it?
20. Is aqua/black the correct spatter colour for the trunk?
21. Is the correct air cleaner a single snorkel for the 70 TA?

That's all for now...thanks !!

"Endura" plastic compound is the correct material. Pontiac was the 1st to use this.

Metal front valance, check your Rally II 2 letter code "JW" by the valve stem, if you got the correct wheels for your car, they are very valuable wheels ! # you gave for the carb is correct, very expensive too, good luck finding one, air cleaner is single snorkel for 1970 TA.

Do you have the correct WS 400 RAIII engine with #12 heads and 12 bolt rearend ?

2-plastic 3-match the trim on the car 7- don't think they fit, has to be 70/73years 9-don't think any filler, how big is the gap?18-was an option 19- sticker,15-stock pump can still be ordered, any body parts/stuff, early birds should be able to help you out.If not, gasoline alley in port coquitlam B.C should be able to help you out.

Thanks so far, all. Sorry I haven't responded - been away for a bit.

Pontorquer: I don't have the JW rims; they're JL. But I do have the correct, numbers-matching WS motor, #12 heads (interestingly enough, both heads have the exact same date code), and the 12 bolt rear.

87 player bird: the gap where the side spoiler meets the valance is only about a 1/4". I'm thinking that some adjustments to the positioning of these parts will close it up. Just wanted to make sure the gap can be closed without any filler coming into play.

Thanks,

Hmmm....

There is a JL on each rim but, at second glance, there's also a JA. The JL code doesn't seem applicable because the car is currently riding on 225-70R15 BFGs.

What does the JA code represent?
