1965 L79 Chevelle convertible

I am perusing the idea of buying another L79 car.  I have had several phone conversations with this guy on possible buying his 1965 Chevelle Malibu L79 Convertible. This car is not a SS car but just a plane jane with bench seats. He is driving the car now and has sent me several pictures. It looks like it needs quite a bit of work, new top, quarters, bumpers, interior and other areas of rust that needs to be fixed.

The car now has a 327 300hp engine in it.  The original engine is out of the car and in his garage, it is complete but needs to be rebuilt. He said he bought the car in Cal. from a guy who was the second owner. He has no paper work or protect o plate to show that this an original L79 Car just the word of the second owner.

Asking price is $14k which I think is a little high for a car which is suppose to be a L79 car with no paper work. The only good thing that if this is an L79 car there were probably less Custom Convertibles made with this option than SS cars. Any comments or what you think this car might would be worth.

Looks to be a very unique car, L79 or not. Seems like the price might be a touch high but it depends how bad you want something. How often do you see a car like this for sale? I think I paid too much for my 65 Acadian, yet I haven't seen any others like it for sale since, and it is what I wanted. Value of anything depends on what someone is willing to pay. If you are not planning to sell the car, does it matter if you have to pay premium price? There are all sorts of cars in that price range and in varying condition, so it might be good to see what $14G will buy you and compare that way.
We have all talked about prices on here before and ultimately the conclusion I usually see is that it is a better deal to buy a completed car than it is to buy a project. Projects cost more if you cannot do the work yourself.

In the end, one must ask himself "how bad do I want this?"

what does that amount of money buy for a nice, non L79 convertible?

Unless u can verify its real, then really your just looking a car that u

described as needing a lot of work. Doesnt mean the seller is trying

to mislead, the end result is the same ,its either an L79 or its not,

and if thats what your looking for then doing extra research is worth while.

If in then u bought it and it turned out not to be an L79 would u be good

with that or upset and always "wish" u hadnt bought it

To me the question is not how much is it BUT how much do you need to spend to get the car the way you want it. Having seen your Beaumont I think I know what you want and it is going to be expensive, probably twice the asking price imo. So is that a $45,000 car?

With you guys already owning a few L79 cars, and knowing the value of them. I think tracking down the other owners or doing some sort of background check is really worth the money.
Do the numbers check out on the Cowl tag?

Do you wish to adopt me?

Is that a US cowl tag? It's sure hard to see.

I don't see the 2L on the bottom for four speed, if so.

This is a drivable project car, it does need a restoration. It is a numbers matching car, all parts are there and it is in primer. The L-79 option is a 327cid 350 horse (EC code) motor, 4 speed posi track car in a convert. I have owned this car for too long and I hava simply lost interest. Also this is not an SS, it is a Malibu L-79 The car is a resto project and the price reflects the L-79 raritie and status. please call 913-221-3182 I plan on putting photos up, thanks looking

May consider partial trade, looking a late modal F150

Not to derail this thread but 14G for a car that needs no sheet metal, if it's the car you want,  is a good price in my eyes. The costs to restore a rusty body these days is pretty scary. However, on something like an L79 car, you gotta think it's worth it at almost any cost.

I would get the picture of the engine pad and date code on the block to see if it matches with build date of the car. Back then they some times put the vin on the pad and some times not. Knowing the casting date & the stamped date will give you a start in the right direction. Gota love our Canadian docs. here, you know what you have.

Having the original engine in the garage is a good thing.  Check to see if its the correct block casting number and date. Also the Engine assy number with the correct suffix code should be on it also a partial vin number to match the cars vin number. Should have EC or ED atamped on the pad for 65 350 hp 327.

Just got off the phone with this guy he has called me 3 times sense I've made this post. Car is in Kansas so I would have to drive down & bring it back to Mi. He knows that we have the 2 L79 Beaumonts & a 66 L79 Acadian. He wants to sell it to someone you knows about L79 cars and will bring it back to Original condition.

it sounds like a fair deal for a real rare piece. If the engine matches , thats a great indicator its the real deal. If the body and floor are solid it will bring that kind of money easily I would say...

No partial VIN on the block in 65 I don't think, is there? Only 68 and on?

I think $14k is high also. Project cars are really in the toilet as far as price right now. This looks solid, but it's still a project and no positive proof it's a L79 car. He's calling you now so I would say the ball is in your court for a realistic lower offer. If it was that nice I'm sure some deep pocket dude from the Kansas area would have scooped it by now.
