What is your average spending per year on the car hobby?

The "old vs young" thread made me think about this. I've seen this done before on car forums.

What would you say is your average spending per year on old cars? Not regular vehicle maintenance, etc, strictly maintaining, restoring, whatever on classic cars.

Please don't say stuff like " I can't say, my wife doesn't know, I don't add it up, my banker says it's too much......" , stuff like that. Please contribute a dollar amount so we can get an idea how much we put into this great hobby.

I'll start by saying for me it's likely on average about $3,000 per year. This past year was more with the engine/trans conversion on my car.

Not counting fuel, oil or tires I think it's a minimum of $1,500 and a maximum of $25,000 per
vehicle per year.

someone shoot me.. please... just shoot me.
it's 95% done and after that I expect to spend less than 1500 a year..  unless i start another project..

does that include buying complete cars, project cars,, or just the parts to keep em moving?? LOL !!

I've been averaging $5000 a year on cars , or parts cars for projects lately.

been spending $3000 a year on parts , etc to complete projects, that includes body work, mechanical , and wheels / tires.

I however have sold $5000+ worth of projects I'll never get to , spare engines that never get built, and wheels that have been collecting dust.

so all in all , it evens out !!

In the past year I purchased 4 wheels, 4 tires, a steering wheel, reverse lights, and dog dish caps. Probably totalling $2k. As this is the first time I've changed the tires in 22 years (which at the time cost me $150 for the four of them)...25 years ago I replaced the rag (about $1500), and rebuilt the motor (about $1800)... I guess I'm into for about $300/year. This past year really screwed up my average. If only I wasn't so paranoid, I probably could've gotten another decade out of the tires.

PS  Oddly enough, my daily driver (a 2003 model) has probably depreciated by $4k per year since I bought it used in 2005.

you don't want to know.  I somehow keep ebay in business as they make their commission each time I buy a spare part for my cars.   Oh, and last year I bought a rusty old 70 Safari Estate wagon just for the motor and tranny.

Remember you're buying spare parts for cars you don't even have yet.
Also we're both buying spares for spares as well as trying to corner the market on some specific parts.

If we can include storage charges. I believe they should all live inside. Main reason for that is I find that they stay in same condition a lot longer, verses weather damage etc. So for storage $4800 a year. I went from trying to restore to buying mint original or restored. It took about 15 years to find what I wanted and shed what I no longer wanted. I am a numbers guy so keep track of everything spent, bought, sold etc. Long and short have spent well over $250k, but sold off $100k. With $58k in last 8 months. My budjet for everything per year, not purchase of collector units is $8k a year. I feel it makes this a fairly reasonable hobby (diease) to be in. Hard to go out on a weekend washing, waxing or driving around in a GIC,RRSP, etc. Not saying they are a bad thing, god knows we all have them as well. Cars more fun (-:

Last couple of years have spent about $1600 per year.  To many kids and grandchildren to spend money on first.

I got $4000 into the yellow GTO. About $1000 a year. I just put $7500 in the orange GTO this year. With a young family I would not be able to put out this kind of money so I have a car account and now have to find some parts cars to bring up my $0 balance. cry

I WOULD SAY IN THE LAST 20 OR SO YEARS, I SPEND BETWEEN $5000-$15000 A YEAR. ALTHOUGH THE LAST 3-4 YEARS I HAVE BEEN SAVING FOR A LONG AWAITED GARAGE, SO CARS HAVE NOT BEEN RECIEVING MUCH OF MY TIME OR MONEY. I HOPE TO BE PUTTING IN GOOD TIME IN MY NEW GARAGE THIS WINTER THOUGHsmile. MY BANK ACCOUNT WILL BE EMPTY, BUT I DO HAVE A COUPLE EASY PROJECTS I CAN GET AFTER FOR LITTLE COST UNTIL MY BANK ACCOUNT RECOVERS. I MUST ADD, I HAVE NO WIFE OR KIDS TO CARE FOR.

I put a little bit of money away so i have a bit to spend. Over the past couple years i sold some toys, literally, and had a bit of extra money. This year i won't spend more than 6 or 7 hundred, unless family dictates the money going for more important things. No questions asked if that is the case, priorities priorities!

I spend a fair amount that I don't share the total with my wife,I'm sure it would be $5000 a year or more but I have 4 old cars and two drivers it is somewhat of a cheap hobby, my neighbour spends a lot more on golf !

As for how much I spend on my children I'd like to say that when I was working (now retired) I hated listening to all the belly achers at the paper mill tell me about their kids education/cars/living expenses, its uncalled for, a cheap investment in our children's future I sent both my son and daughter through university in the 1980's and 1990's and would not want to hear the total as I am blessed to have two children to send through school.

Being retired now really makes it hard to maintain my car, as a limited income makes it a little harder to do all the things that you would like to. Other than insurance, gas, oil changes, etc.,I would think that I would be very lucky to get through the year for less than $1000.00.  I am definately going to have to cut back now on the number of months that I insure it, or try for collector plates (these are only about 250.00 per year here in B C, but the car is supposed to be almost original stock condition. Will also be cutting back on the number of road trips and car shows.  Wow just realized that being retired and on a limited income is a little depressing!! Welcome to Beautiful B C where some of us are real estate rich, and cash poor!!!

Some years when I was working full time I spent up to $10-15k. Now at part time and a bit of horse trading...hmmm, I'm at about the same. Yikes!! I gotta stop. I'm including depreciation on vehicles in that equation. Some years I've done ok. But having new car payments on a still devalueing car add's to that.

probably 3-5 grand a year most years. This year is more with the 700r4 swap in the Camino and rebuilding the 427. I picked up a shifter, console and parts, probably spent 5g's already this year. Planning to sell the IROC and pick up something else ??

No idea but this year is the first where more parts are going out than in. The ecomomy has crested and my boom years are behind me. I'm picking the cars from the herd and the rest are going. I am only buying parts related to my project. I sure hope the ecomomy does better next year.
