Side view mirrors 1964 Pontiac

On a 64 Parisienne,....does anyone know ,...

Were the mirrors installed at the factory? I've read somewhere that they were installed by the dealer. ? Also,.... where is the "factory correct" location? .,,,on the door or fender?  I've seen a few '64s that had the mirrors mounted on the front fenders.  The owners claimed that the fender location is "where is was mounted" when the car was new.  I have no idea as to what is correct.

Does anyone know of a repro source for the factory style mirrors?
I am aware that 1 mirror or two was an option in '64.

Thanks

They were a dealer installed accessory.
They are the same as a 64 chevrolet and chevelle one

the chevy ones are avail repro.  but they have a bowtie on them

Ecklers and maybe other places sell a "cheaper" one with NO bowtie
This would be the correct one for a canadian car.
Just do some internet shopping to find a good source.  Start with Ecklers

..our ds mirror is on the door. I just got a used one from Will in Sask. and a bracket from Carl in Winn. We were going to install that one (ps of course) on the door also. Seems correct but I'm really not sure. I'd love to know the correct location as well.

my 64 parisienne came with dual mirrors on the doors. it seems if they were ordered from factory they came with the gto mirrors. which look identical to chevy but no bowtie and the rear of the mount was squared off. strange note to add, my car was original paint but when we stripped it, it had 2 holes filled were mirrors would have been on the fenders.

Pete, can you remember if the holes in fenders were just screw holes or was there a larger hole in the middle of screw holes for remote cable??  I'm wondering if they got some US fenders mixed in on the "line" or possibly a mechanic drilled the fender thinking that's where they go & customer didn't like that location!! Who knows, but I've never seen Cdn factory mirrors on fenders, just the US models

MY '64 LAURENTIAN HAS ONE ON EACH FENDER. MY GM PAPERWORK DOES NOT MAKE MENTION OF THEM AS AN OPTION ON MY CAR SO THEY MAY HAVE BEEN DEALER OR CUSTOMER INSTALLED.

These are accessory GM mirrors available at the dealer.  They were used from about 1958 all thru the 1960's.  It was customers preference where they were mounted, so there is no set Template.  These could have been mounted on the fender or door or anywhere inbetween for at least a 10 year period on any and all GM cars and even ford used this same casting thru the 50s.

Really interesting!! It seems that there is a consensus that mirrors were only installed by dealers as an option.   I've owned three 1964 Parisiennes.  (I bought them used)   Two were originally sold in Manitoba,.. and 1 was originally sold in Alberta.  All three had the same mirrors.   I guess the dealers installed whatever "GM" mirrors that they had in stock.

These are the mirrors that all three of my '64 Parisiennes had.  Which ,.. according to Imapala Bobs catalog ,... were only used by the "factory" in 1960 GM\Chevrolets.

mirror.jpg

The factory '64 mirrors are different.  So ,.. it's possible that each dealer installed whatever they had.  I think all of them were made of white metal. All of which ,.. were notorious for pitting!!  You'd think that one of GMs improvements for the "Canadian Pontiac" would have been all stainless steel trim for the great salty white north.  No,..  instead we were given such revolutionary options as floor mats with a Canadian maple leaf and an air cleaner with a flat dish lid wink.gif

two holes were in my fenders, which were smaller than the holes in the door. I guess laws from provinces and states differ, my dad's 62 chev pickup came with only one out side mirror, but when safety came about, we had to put one on the passenger side. if you read some of the notes in assembly manuals you'll see that a lot of factory accessories were shipped with the vehicle but installed by the dealer.

..this topic is interesting because I recently noticed (don't really know how I missed it before..) that our ds mirror (mounted on the door) actually has the 3 overlapping "shields" on the back so either the factory or a subsequent owner installed a Buick mirror on it. This mirror also has a different-shaped housing than the smooth-backed Pontiac unit but other than that it's identical, as is the mounting bracket. So unless somebody else has a good used Pontiac mirror I guess I'd better go visit Impala Bob's..!

Randy, do you happen to have an Impala Bob's part # for that mirror? That's the type that's on our car too. Maybe I couldn't find it because i was searching under '64 not'60... Whether it's '60 or '64 I think I'll just stick to the style that's on there now. Any of you '64 guys, is this the style you have..?

The exact/correct '64 - '66 Parisienne mirrors are at Ames Performance on catalogue page 66. It has the exact pad and bracket also.
They do not have a bowtie on them.
The one pictured earier in the thread is not exact, but close for '59 - '62 GM (Pontiac).

My "virgin" driverside mirror located on the door is exactly like the Ames one.

In the process of buying and selling several Canadian built cars, I acquired two of the fender mount mirrors in rustfree condition.
I posted a couple years ago asking if these were standard because the doors did not have any holes for mirrors.

As a U.S. citizen, I can say I never saw a production GM car built in the U.S. that came with fender mount mirrors.  I did see a number of individuals in the states that added mirrors to their fenders, especially  on vehicles they were towing with.  While traveling to and from the west coast, I saw more than one station wagon on the road with both side and fender mirrors.

The two fender mirrors I have are identical to the ones pictured earlier in this thread.

The number of the mirrors from Impala Bobs in my earlier post are DM5960 $49.88 ea (lelt or right)

As Darryl posted ,... they were actually "period correct"  till '62. And that's what Impala Bobs book indicated as well.  However, these are the ones that have been all three '64 Parisienne's I've owned.  I think that's what the dealer had in stock.  In any case,.. I prefer the look of this one to any other I've seen.,.. but really they are not the '64 mirrors.

It's interesting to see the post by "forespeed",.... that he's never seen a US car with fender mounted mirrors from the factory.  I'm beginning to glean a bit of insight from his comment,...
Mounting the mirrors on the fenders seems to have been a tenancy of car dealers (not the factory)  in the late 50s.  It seems this  was carried over into the early and mid 60s.

Note the fender mirrors on this '59.  It makes sense to have the mirrors on the fenders because of the swept back windshield.  This would provide clear visibility on a car with this type of windshield.
1959-impala-1.jpg

Starting with '61,.. the windshield no longer swept back.  But I  guess there were still new customers of '61s and later that insisted on the fender location. Or at least ,.. the dealer still thought that was the "correct" location.

These are the ones that Darryl Mentioned which are actually the ones considered "factory correct" for '64.

Norm, I have seen a number of 64 American Pontiacs (full size and Lemans/GTO) with fender mirrors but they always seem to be the remote, never the standard. Also, as you state, I have no proof if they are factory or dealer installed either. Anyone know if remote was factory installed on 64 US Pontiacs?

I am guessing they would have much longer cables than a door mount mirror would they not? This would indicate they are destined to be fender mounted, if so.

Hi Neil  Thanks for the input.

I've attached a picture of the first '64 which I restored. ( Actually the photo was shot by a CP member at a car show about 2 years ago. ) I sold it in '03.  It's in the "exact condition" as when I sold it.  Mint!  The guy has really taken care of it.  And you won't believe it ,... I was at a car show last year,... and I met the new owner (It's changed hands twice)  And he says ,... ""would you like to take it for a spin?""!!  So ,. myself and my wife & 9 month old daughter hopped in ,... and took her for a ride!  Man ,... that 283 sang the same as the day I rebuilt it!   It was sweet!!  At the time ,.. I rebuilt the stock block, bored .060 over, double hump heads,.. a 600 cfm holley and a CS179R cam with a TH 350 transmission.   I wish I'd had deeper gears in the back though. (stock)  But,. if I was in first,... sitting at around 2500 rpm ,.. and stand on it ,... it would sing through the gears till the needle was buried!  It pulled amazing for a small 283!  I must say ,... the 283 can rev like no other small block!!

my old 64.JPG

Anyways,...you can see the mirrors which I indicated.  They're actually correct '62 mirrors.  But that's the way I bought it.

BTW,...
I bought this car for $600.00 with major rust when it was parked next to a barn.  $6000.00 later ,.. this is what it looked like.  At least the present owner takes car of it and enjoys it.  So I have no regrets!

Side note,.. those headlight bezels are NOT stock on the Custom Sport (as we all know) Every '64 Custom Sport owner thinks he's found "a new option"  when they see chrome bezels on a CS. But,.. a CS NEVER,..EVER.,,, came with chrome bezels,. stock or "option".  They were ALWAYS 2 piece painted from the factory.  I installed the chrome ones,... but I have the painted originals,. which now are the ones that are hard to find wink.gif

US remote mirrors were mounted on lt. fender with cable control mounted on bottom of dash near emm. brk. release. They did have a matching rt. side manual mirror. These are the same as GTO of that yr. & are extremely expensive if you find one. E-rape had a right side that was bid to over $800 US & didn't meet reserve!!!!! OUCH

Randy, you'll have to explain this headlight bezel thing to me. Our car has one-piece bezels ( I know 'cause I removed them to change headlights..) that are painted flat black on the inside and chrome all around the outer rims. Are you saying those aren't stock? Seems strange, as if that is the case they are about the only things on the car that aren't. This car was totally unmolested when we bought it. Not a single thing had been touched, modified or removed. Are you saying that someone removed the stock bezels and installed new one-piece ones? I guess that could have happened but isn't that kind of strange? I mean why would they touch nothing at all on the car except for swapping out the headlight bezels? I'm certainly not the expert but it seems kind of strange...would love your input. BTW, we've just installed a new Air-Ride system and have found the the single (and small...) compressor they put in just isn't up to the job. Your '64 looks lowered. Do you have an air-ride system and if so, what setup did you use..?

Cheers on the info and the car..very nice ride..!

Neil

I took a pair of bezels of a custom sport last year and were two piece. On the custom sport ones the outside edge of the bezel is not chrome but painted body colour. To do this it is made in two parts. The non custom sport cars are all chrome with painted black inserts.
