Maybe I need to move to Canada, US is clearly both socialist and fascist

So renewing your driver's license is an occasional thing, in the past maybe every 6 years or so you have to pay extra money to renew and get a new piece of plastic, and sometimes you have to go in so they get a new digital photo, eh?

Now remember: we (my spouse and I) have been driving, with state-issued driver's licenses, continually for over 40 years.

So now my wife's name comes up on some list, I don't know what, lots of personal invasions are done in the US nowadays under the banner of Homeland Security (you know the Nazis were big on Homeland Security, right? The first time I ever heard the word "homeland" was in reference to the Nazis), but this year she gets a notice in the mail that she has to go in to the driver's license bureau to get her renewal in person.

She is younger than me so the fact she got this notice and I have not (yet) means it is not an age-driven thing (like vision tests for old farts).

I am going to restrain myself and not get into a rant about the indignities heaped upon the taxpayer by the DMV. We are all familiar with the long lines, the surly employess, the stupid rules, no need to reiterate, eh?

Similarly I will refrain from ranting about the socialism inflicted upon US citizens. If I did, I would work myself into a lather and have a stroke and nobody (except the hospitals) would be happy about that, eh?

SO let's get to the point.

This notice my wife got from the DMV says, when she comes to renew, she must bring "NO PHOTOCOPIES OF ANYTHING, NO EXCEPTION":

1. PROOF OF IDENTITY - either (a) Valid U.S. passport or (b) Original Certified Birth Certificate (Hospital Birth Certificates are not acceptable)

- drivers license does not count, of course (refer to paragrah #2 above)

- if you are not a US citizen then you can get by with an "Original Department of Homeland Security document showing proof of lawful presence" (I mention this because the Homeland Security reference is not coincidental, eh?)

- so if I was a sleeper terrorist for the past 60+ years, how hard would it be to fake a Birth Certificate???!!! THERE IS NO PICTURE ON A BIRTH CERTIFICATE AND I COULD LOOK LIKE ANYONE SO HOW DOES THAT PROVE MY IDENTITY???!!! (sorry for the outburst, bureaucratic stupidity does that to me)

2. PROOF OF SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER - Original social security card of pay stub with name and full SS#

- what the **** does that have to do with driving???!!!

- answer: another way to document and catalogue and cross-reference your subject citizens

3.  PROOF OF RESIDENTIAL ADDRESS - PROVIDE TWO OF THE FOLLOWING:

- Deed, mortgage, residential rental agreement
- Voter registration card
- (lots and lots of possible things on the list - but WTF you are responding to something THEY SENT YOU IN THE MAIL so why on earth would you need to prove - not once, but twice - that you live where you got your mail from them???!!!)

First, the fascists document and record everybody, and we all know what happens after that ...

If only it were not so darn cold during the winter up in Canada cry.gif

I'm going to go make myself another drink ...

Dave

Remember Dave, the grass isn't always greener... but come on up! Yes, the winters are colder, but who says you have to interact with it! Have a heated walkway between your house and garage, a fridge in the garage and a secondary power source for the inevitable power outage(s).
At least the hurricanes are MUCH weaker by the time they get up here!

My last trip to Florida just over a year ago resulted in my luggage being search both ways. I find a nice letter in there when I opened it up from Homeland Security. The Fort Lauderdale crew cut off my locks and discarded them even though I had the approved type. It didn't bug me when I got  to Palm Beach and opened my bags but when I got back home to Toronto and found the same thing I was peeved.

Both my grandfathers and father served Canada in WWI & WWII and two of my uncles were career USMC. I think they were wasting there time looking in my stuff. My golf bag seemed to be cleared very fast.

Like the others said you are most welcome here but we are subject to the same indiscretions from time to time.

reading Dave's rant reminded me of our dearly departed Hillar's rants about living in Fascist Ontario.  While he was considering moving to Alberta where he would have been better off, he was also considering Mega-Socialist British Columbia which would have been 10 times worse than Ontario.

I agree! I left B.C to relocate to Ontario. Love the coast, hate the government. Even worse than Mcguinty if you can believe it! I couldn't afford to rase a family there even though I owned my house for 12 years, cars were paid, etc. @ incomes are manditory or forget any kind of lifestyle. No sports, extra corricular activities for the kiddies, I made pretty good dough as well.

Huh. I had no idea the provinces were so different. Stupid me.

So, Alberta, includes Jasper National Park? Wow, that was hands down the most beautiful place (not to downplay all the other beautiful places in your great country of Canada, eh?) we visited on our American Orient Express Grand Trans-Canada excursion ...

Thank all for your thoughts,

You missed the southern rail route through the Canadian Rockies, including Revelstoke, Rogers Pass, Golden, Lake Louise & Banff, it's much more breathtaking than the Yellowhead route.  However, 20 years ago the federal politicians decided to keep the regular passenger traffic running on the northern route.  Now the southern route is only offered on big dollar tours.

Glad you feel that way Dave.  I think I may have found you a '56 Alberta (and BC) road map!...

Here's the route we took, yes through Yellowhead Pass:

And I spent a lot of time in the observation car, eh?

We did see the 300 foot Pyramid Falls which is only visible from train, and we froze our Florida feet on the Columbia Icefield smile.gif

A great trip, a small slice of the great country of Canada!

Saskatoon and Winnipeg are points of interest and Edmonton isn't? (Man, sometimes the truth hurts...)

Yeah, Dave... I think it would be a big shock how much our governements are in our pockets and our lives up here... and it certainly varies province to province. Manitoba has been under an NDP government for a long time. Extreme Socialism at work here, the main difference is that the majority of people up here like it!

WAit! Just because there was a schedule to maintain, doesn't mean we didn't see you as a point of interest, here's what the brochure said:

"Continuing through the Rockies, as we follow routes traveled by the regions earliest explorers and settlers, the day is spent enjoying the amenities of the train. In central Alberta, sprawling sage-covered cattle ranches pass by our windows and transform, as we continue east, into a vast agricultural patchwork of amber fields of wheat, pink fronds of barley and pale yellow crops of rapeseed."

Plus I am pretty sure the train goes right through Edmonton. Next time I will make them stop and see you!

OK?

Dave

People share names, some letters are off by 1, computer bots pick this stuff off all the time
right or not

Here in NY they make us by plates every few years
Big brother is just getting to big

Just like going over the peace bridge
Have not been pulled over in years
This year twice in a row, going back into the states

Just have to deal with big brother
Nothing to hide
Nothing to worry about

Did not want to make you worry, but just check into things
Identitiy is the first easy thing

Probably nothing but clerical error
