Wide open throttle. Level ground. Revs building up into the top rpm range..my 327 starts to suddenly and abruptly fall flat. Backing off slightly brings it back to power but it won't accept wot. The engine feels like it's ready to go up way further in rpm but it can't. No tach. No way near max rpm. Engine running very smooth and well all round.
The filter in the carb is (was) fine. It's the brass type. It's possible that it's become restricted in the last few weeks. The carb was run previous without a fliter, and it was plugged right up with red oxide silt. So it stands to reason that debris is still coming down the line from the tank.
Will a paper filter have less restriction than the brass micron filter?
I looked into having the 43 year old tank dropped, opened up and cleaned out and having a liquid liner done. It would have cost me the same as new Spectra tank!
The engine has 59K on it. Would the valve springs be tired at that point?

A fuel pressure gauge would really help you determine if the problem is before the carb. Not sure if Princess Auto sells them. Perhaps the fuel pump is a little weak from sitting all those years. Other than that I'd bet on the float level.
Mark, if you start from a dead stop and push it pretty hard does it pull good all through first or does it fall flat pretty quick?
When I was about 20, I drag raced a 327 TH350 65 Acadian with a Holley. I had even less carb knowledge then than now! It would pull like a banshee off the line, all the way through first, shift into second, and a good part through second it would go flat. A friend at the track knew Holleys and recognized immediately it needed the float adjustment. Bingo! Of course, the first run after he fixed it I split the driveshaft in the traps and it came through the floor destroying the trans case and breaking the pinion. End of drag racing career.

It only goes flat at the very, very upper end. But not always. today I had it on the pipe and it pulled all the way without fail. Yesterday I checked the dwell and timing. I was actually able to get another degree btdc out of it before any pinging. I'm running Sunoco 94 and orginally I could only get 4 degrees. I'm at 5 now and it's running totaly sharp and crisp. The engine and the way it runs now compared to when I first got it is day and night (it wasn't ever run hard I think). Maybe it's time to look at the tank.
Obviously it's no performance car, but it does have a certain strong way of pulling above 50mph. It'll also spin a tire from the line, and it never could before. It sounds wicked from the standstill, the sound reminds me of a Green 69 SD396 that lurked in our area back in the late 70's. You can here all the pipe front to back and the 327 seems to rev way more freely then before. I can only imagine what a BB would sound through these pipes! It does get a lot more attention now!

If you are pretty sure you got the float setting nailed and are bent on trying something, I think I'd drop the tank. It's really not that big a job if you run it close to empty first. If nothing else, it would give piece of mind.
My two cents worth...
