(No) Truth in advertising

As a few of you guys may know I spend a pile of free time surfing cars for sale. Been a hobby of mine since I was a kid reading the classifieds in the daily paper. Some of the claims made by the owners are just out & out pure B.S. A few that get me are;
1) "Has 150 hp NOS kit, but never used it. Yeah right
2) "Stunning condition" Never seen a car yet that could stun me unless it was hooked up to 220 volts.
3) "Odometer just quit working last week" How about 2 years ago
4) "Engine only has 50,000" Yet the car has 300,000 and shows no signs of ever having a R&R.
5) "No Bondo" usually means full o' bondo
6) "All original" except paint, interior, driveline, tires, chrome, maybe has the original window winders and glove box door.
7) "Just had major overhaul"   Spray bombed the engine.
8) "Religiously serviced" changed the oil for the 1st time in years in a church parking lot.

I could go on and on but let's hear some from the rest of  you guys.

You guys missed the ultimate classic:
"XX,000 original miles". meaning that's what the odometer says. 1XX,000, 2XX,000, 3XX,000 ???

Then there's the:
"runs perfectly, just needs a new starter" - so unless you come with your own starter, you aren't gonna hear it run.

"Minor rust." No comment required.

Almost forgot this gem:
"includes all parts required to complete "
Meaning there's so many boxes of old junk stored inside, in the trunk and on top of the car it'll take you 2 years to sort it all out and you'll still be trying to figure out why there's 9 pistons and rods (including only 2 that are 30-over) and what I did with the signal light cancel cam and the one-year-only lights, wipers and radio knobs.

I also love "Hurry, it won't last long!"

Sometimes more truth in that than he meant!

I call about a slightly overpriced 2000 Bonneville with just 129 km, said $4800 will cert in the ad-its a distance away so I ask about as is- he says it'll need nothing ! super clean orig second owner, never aboused and always maintained-owned for three years-bring $4500 cash as is, $4800 was an asking price as is, cert is extra ! It was sounding nice so luckily I have a friend in this city 2 hours away from me so I sent him over.

heres what he sees

2 tires need replaced

chips and dents across the hood and front fenders

paint scuffs on all four corners of bumpers

window fuzzy moldings rotten

rust around fuel filler door

right rear window not working-stuck in the down position

exterior paint somewhat shiny

interior is clean and not smoked in

owner agreed it needs brake work-rotors visibly uneven and brakes pulse

fault codes-low tire press, change oil, check gas cap and 183 + 44

runs and drives good

floors look good

I have much better stories but this one is fresh !!!!

No tire kickers

If it's not gone by XXX I'm gonna crush it

Sacrifice

My loss is your gain

Rare!

Needs a tune up

last week I looked at a nova wagon -- CL ad said "driveable, needs minor work" --- translation = no brakes, hood held down with bungy cord, start by twisting 2 wires under the hood, the only lights that worked were l/h tail & dome, rad leaks , gas tank leaks, fuel pump wouldn't let it more than idle and it had no battery ---- the dumb thing is I still bought it --- but not for his asking price

I remember seeing an ad where the guy had bought the car new but couldn't afford it and had to sell.
The ad really sent up a red flag when he said "have only owned for 2 weeks, car is extremely fast." Seriously, a brand new 4-cylinder 1979 Toyota Celica; what kind of break-in regiment did he follow?

So true TC.  Another case of a few ruining it for the honest folks.  For me the bottom line is, if you are interested in a car, you have to go see it, and you have to verify the details for yourself.  It is a real shame that so many people take such liberties with their descriptions.

True-I can recall having a super clean 68 RS/SS big block Camaro for sale back in 1993-this guy calls from 4 hours away (long at the time) I tell him how nice it is but that the paint is 13 years old with some minor laquer checking and a couple small dents in the hood-after two weeks he comes to investigate-he stood there for at least 15 minutes trying to find the dents I was talking about in the hood ! The laquer checking didn't bother him either until I told him when he was ready to repaint it in Base/Clear the car would have to be stripped--no sale
