Air-Ride systems...

Anybody had any experience installing an air-ride system in a full-size? We just did (and our guy who knows his stuff...) but the (single) compressor is too small (it totally burned out filling the bags the first time..!) and won't raise or lower the car fast enough. This system does not have a reserve tank either. The bags are great, the installation was excellent (kit comes with all the bracketry, shocks etc..) and looks super but the little compressor just can't do the job. We're now going with either two smaller compressors (one for the back and one for the front) or one big one for the entire system. I don't know much about air-ride systems so any thoughts/ideas would be greatly appreciated. Sure looks great when its slammed though! I'll put up some pics when we get it all worked out...

First of all I probably shouldn't be commenting as I know nothing about air-ride systems but have observed a little bit. I saw a guy about a month ago with a very high end air-ride system and I'm just about positive he only had 1 compressor but he had at least 1 reserve tank. It was so nicely concealed that I couldn't see them but man he could rake that car and do anything with it in seconds. I would think the key would be to have reserve air because then you have volume and that's what makes things happen. A compressor can only go so fast but if you have a tank or 2 you can do quite a bit before the new air from the compressor comes into play. Just my idea on it.

Keep us posted on your air system.

My project also has air bags, and I'm currently looking for an air management system.  I would be interested in learning what works best for your '64.

If you used the AIRPOD system, it has the small reserve tank built in , but way under sized. you must use a reserve tank for a big car.

go with the biggist compressor you can find , my buddy that has done 3 systems now use one that is 4 cfm ? I think. NEVER run the compressor on battery alone,,it kills them. this is a similiar compressor..

also make sure your pressure switch is cutting in high enough, the bags with a big car need at least 150 psi to make it move.

add shocks to the front if you havn't done so, it greatly improves the drive.

I'm no expert, this is what I've observed helping with my friends projects.

he's done a 78 Fleetwood sedan, 69 Eldorado, and 96 Caprice....big cars take big air !!

i want to put air in my car as well but those kits are pretty pricey. I was thinking on ordering just the bags with the brackets and then piecing it together as i get more money. What air bags did you use?

...thanks a million Roger. We're going to see our mechanic today. He runs a high-end performance shop and has done a lot of work for us over the years. He really knows his stuff so we're fully shock-dampened at all 4 corners. All the old shocks and springs were toast so the ride and handling alone should be much better. We did ball joints at the same time so everything should be really tightened up. But I think you're right on with your advice re a big pump and a reserve tank. For a big car it seems like the only way to go..I'll let everyone know where we end up for your future reference..
