Safety contact #2. Aluminum floor jack dangers!

As 427Carl found out recently, and luckily without injury, the now common inexpensive Chinese aluminum floor jack can at times fail unexpectedly.

Obviously we'd never work unprotected underneath one...but the fact is a failure like
this comes with consequences that are unpredictable. Alway leave yourself an "out" when using any jack, and use extra caution with one of these. I have a big old steel one, and I admit I've looked at these aluminum jacks thinking they'd be nice. Now I won't touch one.

Thanks for the posting of the pictures carl. They're a eye opener to say the least.

I imagine on uneven ground/pavement the risk would be even higher.

I know someone with two, they are only rated  at 1 1/2 tons. Only good for modern cars, certainly not the big beasts most of us work on.

You said it Mike the offshore crap is flooding the market place and we all have to be aware of this.
The stuff that Princess Auto has is a prime example of what the public is buying. The gadgets they have may be ok but the heavy duty tools they sell i wont waste my money on.

Ordered these guages from Sun Pro, Div of Snap on Tools, for the custom dash bezel from California!!! On opening the pkgs. all guages  are made in China!!! So much for Snap On Tools, thought thay were North American Co. Now I'm wondering about the Speedo ordered through Summit Auto from "AUTO METER" that is being delivered to West Virginia for me to P/up????

Just so you guys know... Carl had helped me out with some tires for my travel trailer.  He not only mounted them for me, he decided to stop at my place while I was at work and install them (he really is a great guy).  That is the point when the jack broke... as was said, uneven ground (gravel) and lifting one side of a 27' trailer.  I am very glad he wasn't hurt, but I feel aweful about his jack breaking!!!!  Now the problem I have is I want to replace it for him, but am not sure what to replace it with.  He likes his jack as it is light, but I would hate for this to happen again....... What to do?????

that was not a Chinese jack   I was a Canadian import! lol

I had tried to lift my8000 trailer with it the day before  lol

I was well back from the trailer, but it did scare me, when it snaped  I though somthing on the trailer broke at first......  I did pick up the axle with a 2 ton bottle jack     I think if I drill 4 holes I can bolt it back together

its too bad that the actual chassis failed when overloaded on that one vs. the seals spewing and just a slow release... glad you weren't hurt!

Scary! Surely reinforces the need to always use jacks and jack stands, rated at least 2 and preferably 3 tons (for our heavy old cars - although lots of new imports weigh more than you'd think - for instance a new Honda Accord weighs over 3500 pounds).

Glad you were not hurt, Carl.
