RE: Maximum velocity. How fast have you gone?

Back in the day, not knowing what klunk klunk was when brakes applied, went to cornwall ont, drove the girlfriend home and headed home with my 64 impala convertible, we had a nice stretch to get at it, buried the needle for about 4 miles, pulled into the village about 2 in the morning, seen a friend, stopped the car and left front wheel fell of right there plus 4 studs, lost the other. Now that was a wake up call.

160 mph on the road and 140 mph on the snow. And I must admit the 140 on the snow is way more fun. And you aren't braking any laws

20+ years ago - 1975 Pontiac Parisienne, 455 T400, 2.00 am on open 4 lane divided highway, no traffic. Speedo topped at 120, but I buried the needle until it pegged at the bottom of the unit. I don't know how fast, just that the speedo coudn't register it. The car was completely stable.

I'm sure a couple of the cars I have today could also do that, especially with a high rear end ratio, but I wouldn't try it now. I was young & single then. Now I have a family, and those are risks not worth taking. I'm now teaching my son to drive. I have to set the right example.

Until you mentioned the "aren't breaking any laws" I was thinking that you were insane to drive a car that fast in those conditions.  But I've since realized that you are insane to drive a sled in those conditions. LOL...

Had an 85 Corolla GTS, managed to get it to 180k, on the way to Radium   HMMM, can't find the pic of 180, but heres one on the way there....LOL  Sure hard to take pics of the speedo at that speed

Also wrapped the speedo on my 88 GMC truck years ago, on the way to Penticton....Drivin them mountain roads sure were fun, the truck was a 350/5speed.  Think I made it from Calgary to Penticton in around 7 hours, and that was with a stop to replace the PS hose in Golden.

above.gifabove.gifabove.gifThoroughly disgusted above.gifabove.gifabove.gif

I have to laugh at these land speed records set with pickup trucks...........nice choice of vehicles guys. omfg.gif

Me mom had a new '78 Parisienne, two door, beautiful car, very responsive handling. Had it up to max, 85 but not pinned, that would take another couple of miles...........my right foot felt like stepping on a wet sponge.

Air cleaner was flipped though..........it was all cool.

High speeds back then on the highway didn't get you into near as much trouble as today. Traffic volume is much greater too!

Let me say that I always try to be safe. I also do not want to jeopardize my license. Speed and safety are interrelated, but NOT in the absolute way that the government and police lead people to believe. Enforcement and punishment is out of whack; I believe we are policed to death here in Ontario. I also believe that some experience in learning to handle a car or bike at speed truly does make you a better driver, not necessarily a careless speed demon!

I've been fast. That is all I can say.

I'd love to meet some of you gearheads face to face where we can elaborate biggrin
