The Great Pontiac Safari

The Great Pontiac Safari

This artticle has hundreds of photos, sales brochures, ads etc covering the Pontiac station wagon from 1955-1980. Canadian models are covered year by year as well! (Much info for the Canadian models came from this site  - thank you)

Please enjoy and all comments are welcome (especially if I screwed up on any of the Canadian Models - let me know and I'll fix it)

Bob

Cool!

3 things may be worthy of mention (as related to 55-56 models):

1. Only 55-56 Safaris had rear fender and taillight treatment emulating other Pontiac models i.e. round taillights and 'waterfall' chrome on top (other Pontiac station wagons of those years, including those built in Canada, were based on Chevrolet bodies and had specific taillights to fit the 55 Chevy upper rear end sheet metal). Safaris of those years (like their Chevy counterparts, the Nomads) were truly unique.

2. In addition to the obviously distinct B pillar and front doors, only 55-56 Safaris had the little beltline dip which was on every other Pontiac model except non-Safari station wagons. Same for 57 except, of course, the "Transcontinental" which was just an upscale 4-door.

3. Sadly, there were no Canadian-built 55-56 Safaris cry.gif

Always great to see more information about our old cars!

Dave

Great side but you do have some mistakes and you did say to correct you.
So where do I start, First of the wagon you have listed as a 1957 Super Chief is not it is a 57 Safari Pathfinder deluxe I know this for a fact as it is my car. Next the wagon you have as a Pathfinder is also a Pathfinder deluxe. If it has full trim it is a Deluxe. If the trim ends mid belt line same as the 1957 Pathfinder Sedan Delivery you have pics of then it would be a Pathfinder. Next all Safari 4 door, handy man and sedan delivery wagon US and Canadian actually have a 56 Ch#vy rear quarter on then. Then only one that shares the 57 rear quarter are 1957 Star Chief Custom Safaris. The tail light housing are totally different they will not inter change. The dog legs are different and the gas fill spout is located in a different area.

Nice article. In Canada for 1955 there was only one Pontiac station wagon built and that was a two door Pathfinder. It was not until 1956 that the Pathfinder Deluxe series was added. In 56 the four door stationwagons were also added.
