I think got a deal?

I replied to an ad on kijiji about a 327 short block that needs rebuilding and made arrangements to view it today. Well it turns out to be a complete engine, 327/275 hp that came out of a boat. Block casting is 3858174 with 4 barrel old style Rochester carb with an angled carb plate (I think to maintain level for the carb?) on a steel intake, small clutch hub on the crank for the boat transmission, Mallory Tach Drive Dual Point Distributor, one 55 lb. deep steel oil pan like I have never saw before, 2 water hose bypass and 462 heads. All for the princley sum of $100. I think I got a deal ?

For 50 bucks, I won't let the seller know what it was really worth!!!

Way to go, excellent deal I'd have to agree.

I love those small journal 327's.

I will bet it is steel. People say there are cast small journal 327 cranks but the next one I see will be my first. Never say never though...

Don't want to rain on your parade because I don't know about Chev marine 327's but some marine engines were built to spin the opposite direction. Worth checking before you start to tear it down.

Anybody know which way the Chev marine engines turned? Is the firing order stamped on the intake manifold? I suspect that should confirm.

I'm hoping you got a deal...

Years ago I worked at Ontario Automobile on Bay St. {chry. dealer} & they rebuilt engines on site. If the engines were twins [2 engines side by side] then 1 turned backwards to offset the others propeller!!!  Make sure yours isn't the backwards one.

If it is reverse rotation then a complete rebuid should take care of it right?

Yes...you can make a reverse rotation engine run the right way for your car...simply switch the firing order and you may have to change the Distributor tooth 180 degrease....can't remember...did a 350 for a boat in the 80's to run backwards.

Pretty sure the "cam's" got to be changed, as gear is machined for opposite rotation, as well as Dist gear. Oil pump& water pump may be diff. too???

Yes I'm sure we did do the cam as well...the guy had a twin small block set up...one clockwise one counter clockwise...we redid both motors for him so it did't go in circles or squares or ...well you get it Carl...

Either that or you'll have to use your reverse a lot more than you had planned and you'll have multiple speed options to go backwards!

Seriously those small journal 327 were the best small blocks i think.  Just a magic combo that sounds so happy to run.

I have one in my avatar 39 Buick for about the last 20 years and it still makes me smile.  Pretty cheap on gas too.
