Wow!  That's pretty cool... a little cheezy, but pretty cool nonetheless to see the old iron in action back in the day.  Obviously '57 - '59 Mercs were cheap and plentiful in the early '70s.

To make my point clear, the reason I posted my initial comments the way I did was not to put down derbying, but just to comment that it bothers me a little to see near 40-year-old cars being sought out for the simple pleasury of destroying them for kicks.  In the hobby I've always applauded the folks who go to great lengths to save old cars and this is the polar opposite of that.  I'm also one who believes that not only the "valuable" ones should be saved.  Hopefully in years to come there will still be some big old wagons left to show future generations that not everybody drove 2 door hardtops and convertibles back in the day.

Living in the rusty part of Canada, good solid cars have always been hard to come by unless you had them shipped in from other places.  I'd probably look at this differently if I lived in the land of plenty (in the west) where 40 year old cars were still sitting around in farmers fields waiting to be crushed, derbied, or even restored.

To each his own.  I've gone to many derbies in the past and have raced stock cars, where lots of sheet metal gets bent.  It's all fun and yet another way of getting your kicks with cars.

I guess I can be too protective of old iron since I grew up in a place where good solid cars have always been a rarity.  I've gotta keep that in check! biggrin

Oh well, I've bored everybody enough with my views on the subject.  To each his own and have fun no matter what you do!

Again, sorry for causing upset on the board.

No need to say sorry, its your opinion, the only thing I hate is every one thinks derby drivers are all hillbilly's alot of the derby guys have really nice restored wagons, imperial, etc as drivers, i wouldnt wreck a mint car but a to far gone solid T-bird or mid 70'S GM would get wrecked in a heart beat. I love all old cars and even have a driver wagon.
