My '68 GTO

I finally got a few pics of the car tonight.  Unfortunately they were taken in the garage as I have to change the cam because of a rounded lifter!!!  The story of the car is as follows....  Our babysitters husband brought the car over from the U.S. about 5 years ago.  At that time the car was blue in colour, he then sent it in for paint and body.  After getting the car back, he was not happy with the job(and I don't blame him), and really did nothing with it after that.  He only put 200 miles on it in that time, and the last 2 it sat in storage.  The car is a true 20 footer, but is a blast to drive...was told it is original mileage around 93,000 WT code 400cu. in. 350 horse 4 speed M20 with 3:55 posi.  As documented by PHS.  The car also has hideaway headlights that work, they just happen to be down right now. The car doesn't have the vinyl top on (which I have) or the trim around the rear window as per the same reason (vinyl first)  I plan on driving it while fixing things as I go and a friend of mine suggested finishing the Lemans I have, then I can drive it while I fix this one properly.  The under carriage has very little surface rust, but lots of undercoating.  Can't think of much else......enjoy

The car looks great John.  350 horse 4 gear...........I can't wait to see it.
I think I would be driving it for the rest of the year. Once they are apart it is a long time before they are back together.
My 69 was 5 years. The 68 has been almost 10.

I think Brad gives good advice, get a cam in it and drive it. You've seen my car now in all it's imperfect glory but I've been driving it for the past 6 years smile

Yup, nice goat John. I like the '68 taillights and the hide-aways.
Most defiantly keep it on the road, may not be park-n-show stopper, but with that drive train (3.55) it will be a show...................watch this.

Plus, you can show Carl how it's done with two tires ablaze.

In all fairness Carl, you'll need to let Unclebernie catch up on the burnout practice. I'm sure a 4gear goat crossed up could be a little narly for the first bit.

Your A body would be similar to drifting a grey hound...............and fun.

They made 8 68 gto convert r/a 4. In 70 there was a dealer option r/a 5 that was in the making. a few squeaked out to the street. Then there was the humbler. Wild machine that never made it to production. A couple escaped the crusher.biggrin

Thanks for the compliments guys!!! I am going to drive it, because that is what they were built for. When I get it up and running again Carl I think you and I need to heat up the tires a little....just for fun (nudge nudge) The taillights in it now are 68 tempest/lemans, but I do have originals, also came with the car. I just started pulling it apart tonight, so I am going to get back at it. If anyone has any idea of a replacement cam or company they like I would love to hear it. Cam specs are kinda jibberish to me!!! Hopefully in the next couple weeks I will have it back up and running.

Hey John, Chris has a good suggestion, Comp Cams has a site where you can put in all your vehicle info and they will suggest a suitable cam. Put all mine in and they suggested a 562 lift roller which should be in this weekend, couldn't miss the BBQ last Sunday.
Ray's right drive and enjoy.

Good suggestion!    Do NOT Do NOT  "overcam" the engine!   You will hate the car forever....   The car ran great with stock cam, and and just needs a new cam.....

I have been looking through a book I borrowed, and my original part number should be 9779067 for the cam. It seems the common upgrade for these motors is to install the next step up part number 9779068 or as it has been reffered to as an 068. I have been directed to a Melling unit thus far Melling SPC-7 camshaft. Never heard of the brand before now, but I am going to check out COMP Cams website and see what they come up with. Also I started teardown last night and what I was told had not been apart, could not have been further from the truth. I haven't got the cam out yet, but a double roller timing chain is in there, and you can tell the aftermarket gaskets. One question....if it is an aftermarket cam, will there be any markings or product ID to tell what it is????  Also check out the pic from under the valley pan.  There appears to be an extra hole that looks broke in the casting.  Does anyone think this will cause problems???  Should I look at anyting else while I am at it???    HELP!!!!!!

Well if you go to "search" at the top of this page and type in humbler, you will find a link. Then if you archive American Muscle car GTO, you will see a segment on the dealer installed r/a 5, Saw the 68 r/a 4 for sale in Vegas in the mid 90's, all paperwork, red, black rag, 4 gear. Was a lot of  $$$ back then.wink
