RE: My '68 GTO

John i think your car is neat and i agree fix it and have fun. Now for the technicle aspect of your motor there are some great choices in cams but be carefull and keep in mind that this is a stock piece. When i built my stroker 400 i researched the web lots and i decided to talk to a pontiac motor builder. The shop i bought all my parts from is SD Performance in BC. The owner Dave Bisshop has a great amount of experience with Pontiac motors and has been building for decades. You can E-mail him through his web site and he is good at helping individuals with choices , you will have to give the particulars of your car. I would also send him the pic of the lifter area because i dont recall having that hole in the couple blocks i had, that might be a serious worry. Hope all works out.

Cam spes---- int exh

I love this cam with #13 heads and headers.
As for the hole .....Drain the oil and see if you have any peices on the plug and look at the filter. SD Performance aslo sells a valley pan brace.

Thats definatly not the way that block should look!!! You can see the broken edges around the bottom of lifter bore, oil return hole is now a broken piece of block & you usually can't see that much of the cam & lifters??? Think you have a "MAJOR" problem here, no STRENGH IN THE VALLEY AREA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have never had a Pontiac motor apart so I am no expert for sure, but the few pics I was able to find on the internet looks like you have more damage than just that one jagged hole in the front wall:

This is a blowup (2X, sorry it is a little blurry) of the above photo, same area as your picture

Agree with Pete - hope you can repair but I would want a real expert to look at it first, as costly and time-consuming as it is to replace a block, better that than have it blow up on you, is my opinion.

Sorry,
Dave

I recieved a message from a guy on another forum he stated that he has had the same casting break at the back of his block for 30yrs, and he is still beating the crap out of it. The hole is in the rear wall near the distributor, and as per 68SD's pics that is how much of the lifters and cam you see on a Pontiac motor. I am not able to get back at it until fter the weekend, so I will finish ripping it apart then and see if I come across any more damage.

Thanks guys.......

I swapped my block out with less damage so if i wanted to rebuild the #'s engine I could. If you rebuild, and then bag on it the next time could be terminal. In my experiance, The pontiac's are really torquey, but DON"T rev 'em above 5-5500 rpm at the highest. They dont like high rev's unless you spend a TON of dough. My camshaft broke in 3 pieces, and took out cyl# 5 when it let go. Just trying to save you some heartache later. I used a 70 400 out of a t/a. Had to modify the pass motor mount as the blocks changed in 70. P.m me if you want any idea's.
