Any used ones you find are probably limp and I don't think they can be brought back to the best of my knowledge?...

Yes this is true . I would prefer an original one though if possible.

In 1968 the Beaumont still used the round mirror if it was the standard mirror. The remote controlled mirror went retangular on the Beaumont for 1968,

It wasn't until 1969 the standard (non-remote) mirror head went rectangular. Acadians stayed with the round head through 1971 for the standard mirror (Novas through 1972). The remote mirror in all cases went rectangular for 1968.

Just a thought, but if your original mirror is in nice shape and the only problem is that the head flops around loosely, take a center punch, turn the mirror to an extreme position where the swivel ball won't show when you are done, and whack the center punch with a hammer on the pivot ball. It will cause a slight interference fit that can tighten things up. It's much the same concept as knurling. Hey, it's worth a shot.

Cameron, CdnGMfan, is one of the most authoritative guys on Board here. If he says it was round in 68 that's how I'd place my money.
