Help with the 5.3 Vortec Flexfuel

My engine switches from 8 cylinders to 4, but at idle goes back to 8 cyl confuseconfuseconfuse
Wouldn't it stay at 4 cyl at idle?  Anybody have knowledge of this engine.

Not sure but I don't think there is enough momentum in the engine to stay running on 4 cyl at idle. My 6L G8 has the DOD (displacement on demand) option and I don't care for it except that when I shut it off, I lose about 3mpg. It sounds like crap when it runs on 4 or 6 and I can really feel the shake of the engine in my arse! But how can I complain, it is faster than my 67SD396 and it gets an honest 28mpg driving 120km/h.

No it will not stay on 4 cylinders at idle, it has to run on eight to idle smooth. These 5.3 on designed to run on 4 cylinders after reaching a certain speed and the torque load is over.

Al;  you are correct!    I have a 5.3 07 Sub  and you only see it on 4 at speed..

It NEVER causes me to "know" when it is in 4 or 8 except by the dash readout ...

   We love it  nod.gif

That means it takes about 1 3/4 gallons to go over 60 miles. With my foot in it 12 gallons to do the same distance.

so the 1st. equation is close to 28 to 30 MPG & the 2nd. is around 5MPG Yeah, OUCH keep your foot out of it. 64 cat. with dual quads does better than that with my foot in the radiator, & will get 18 MPH on the hi/way & I'll bet it sounds better with the 389 at full song & both carter's wide open!!! I can't figure out this "ethenol" garbage, they add it to our gas, we get less milage with it & they charge you more for it!!! That just doesn't "compute" with my brain
