RE: Road trip this Friday

Wow Mark....thanks for the links.....they are all new to me except one!  My first choice of cars was/is a 66-67 Beaumont 4sp, and the 64-67 GTO is a close second. The reason I didnt choose a Beaumont was logistics. All the good ones that I found are just too far away. I cant spend 1000 to go see a car, only to find out that it was overstated.  Maine is very close, but its a convertible. They seem to be worth a little more, but I prefer to avoid them. Your links are still very helpful, and I thank you sincerely! I'm going to go through them again in more detail. I can tell that you understand the fortunate dilemma that I'm in.

Maine is where I bought my car. Nice trip to Freeport, and bringing it back went flawless.
There is a very nice '64 Parisienne, non-original 409 down there, but it's a rag and automatic.

Scroll down on this link to see it ...

Hopefully this helps a little and doesn't serve to provide too many options!  I just figure that the more information you have, the more informed choice you can make.  When it all comes down to it, nobody knows what's right for you except you.

In my case, I can take 2 almost identical cars with minor differences such as colour and options or modifications - One I might fall in love with and the other I wouldn't touch with a 10 foot pole - it's a really personal thing, and over and above practicality, the "oomph" factor has to play into the equation.

Regardless of what all of our opinions may be, at the end of the day you have to be happy with your decision.  If you end up paying more than what the market says it's worth, it doesn't really matter if (1) it is exactly what you want, and (2) if you can afford it.  I'm not intending to sway your opinion one way or the other, but only wanting to provide some data for you that might help you in your decision to make the best choice for you.

Now... 4-speed Beaumont you say... Have you seen this one?

I am second guessing myself at this point, but fully intend to buy this or another car very soon. Whatever I drag/drive home, I will have to live with the decision. I am taking advice locally as well, and preparing myself for those who are waiting to tell me what a better deal I could have had, and what a fool I am. I asked for it, by being so public with it. If you are in this category, you'll have to take a number.....family and friends first!

If your in love with the car.....you'll get it. Was only giving my 2 cents worth.
I should take my own advice. I bought a new truck and drove it off the lot....I think I just lost $10,000. I could of went to Repo.com and got a 2008 for $13,000.
As my wife says.....you never loose money until you sell it.

Darryl, that is one classy Parisienne with power to spare! . If I didnt already have a big car, thats the genre I'd be looking for.

427Carl - I almost see the labor as a non issue(almost), and am not intimidated by it at all.  My favorite orange is Bar Six! Do you remember those?

Mark, I cant thank you enough for doing this legwork with me. I hadnt seen the Beaumont in Cambridge. Anyone know this car?  (I like the color, love the year/model/engine/transmission).  From outward appearances, this is the best prospect to date. I thought I saw a dent, but it was the reflection of another car wheel. Cant talk now......gotta call George!

I'm loving most of the cars in this thread (but not the prices of some).

Hey, no problem!  I love car shopping!  biggrin

If I come across any others I'll post them for you.

Bar Six!  Wow, it's been a long time since I've thought about one of those... they were really good if I recall!

I hope you can make the right decision for YOU. To spend $20+ on a non driving, non safeteid car that you can't jump in and drive is a big leap of faith. I love buying cars also. But that's a lot of coin to toss on the wrong one. Good luck!

Earl and Kim and the guys are right. Be veeery careful and start off low. If this car is not driveable ( I mean on the street, licenced) he can't enjoy it if he doesn't sell it - it can only sit there. And $20-25 large IS large out there right now in this economy. I'm not saying don't buy it but be very careful. That kind of money is too tough to make and too easy to lose. If you could at least drive it home it would make a big difference. Even if you paid too much you could still drive to the the local drive-in cruise joint and show it off! My money'd be on (for example) the '67 Beaumont with the 454/4spd. that you could drive home...but we're all different.

Whatever you do, be careful and don't let your heart lead your head. I've learned that by doing the opposite, so I'm not preaching.

Good luck and make sure you tell us all how it turns out..!

I havent heard any bad advice from anyone and appreciate the advice. Its good to hear from anyone who has a regret for following their heart, to help avoiding the same mistakes.  I'm still convinced that the Lemans isnt rediculously priced, but it does provide ammo to the buyer.

The 67 Beaumont found by Mark wasnt on my radar until yesterday. I am very interested, (I would choose this over the Lemans)and have spoken with the owner. I got the feeling that he doesnt know how serious I am due to the numerous calls he is getting. I plan to go see it in 8 days. (maybe sooner) This car is similarly priced, but isnt comparable in my opinion as one is an obvious driver, and the other is declared to be show quality. A driver suits me better anyway.

I gave a deadline of last night to receive the VIN (65 Lemans) for research and insurance purposes, instead I received this email (in italics below, I xxxed out his private info) last night. I was looking for a reason not to buy, and this is a big red flag for me. I feel bad for him when I consider that it may be true. But, having lived the life that I have, I am suspect. I had a weird feeling when I asked for the VIN last week, he asked "when do you need it by?"  This deal is almost dead. I will postpone the road trip by one week and switch to Cambridge Ontario....that'll give me more time to find others to look at enroute. Mark, there is a finders-fee for you you should I buy this car, for taking time from your day to assist a stranger. Same goes for anyone who finds my car. It is 1% of price.

(Tom, I tried calling 506-357-xxxx but I seem to be getting a fax machine and I also called your work number but I believe you may have been off duty. So I will try the email method. Something has come up that will make this weekend  for us to meet somewhat impossible, I have to go into the hospital for xxxxxxxxxx due to having another xxxxxxxx attack the other day. The Surgeon says 1-3 days in Hospital if all goes well by xxxxxxxxx way or 7-10 days if he has to do the old conventional way, along with a couple of weeks of recouperating at home. So its looking I will be out of commission for a couple of weeks anyway. I will be out of town untill tomorrow night, I will give you a call tomorrow night, thanks......

Wise move Tom. Take your time, breathe, and shop around. It took me over 4 years to find my car ... it ain't pretty (yet), but it's exactly what I want, and could afford.
I like the Cambridge Beaumont over the GTO clone (just my choice by the pics). I hope the '67 is sound.
Maybe one of the guys on here can look at it for you, and give you the lowdown ... maybe save you a trip.

Hey Darryl

Thanks, I did spend a long time looking for the GP too. It would be great if someone did see the car before I drove down. There may be a reason to exclude it that I wont know til someone sees it. I guess this entry will stay on my 'bucket list' for a little longer.

Thanks Neil for your insight, and everyone for putting 2c in.  I will update.

I agree with the others who say take your time and find the car that you really want.  I'm not saying don't get the Lemans (however your latest information does throw up a red flag!), but if it were me and my first choice was a Beaumont... I'd be getting a Beaumont.  With the money you are planning to spend you should be able to find exactly what you are looking for, but it just may take you a while to find it.  In the meantime you gave a gorgeous GP to cruise in to "fill the gap".

Thing is, if you spend your cash now for choice #2, then a part of you will always wish you bought choice #1.  And if you are like me, one week after you bought #2 you will see a pristine example of #1 for sale for less money! wink

Regarding the finder's fee... I really appreciate your generous offer but I couldn't accept it.  One of the things I really enjoy about the car hobby is the willingness of fellow hobbyists to jump in and help out when another is in need.  While I don't have a hobby car at the moment I enjoy participating in any way that I can - and this is one way that I can help out.  Besides, it's just virtual shopping for me... I like doing it!  There will come a day when I'm looking for another old car to get back into the hobby, and I know there will be times that I'll need some help  - so maybe I'll just bank some good karma 'till that time arrives. biggrin

In the meantime, good luck with your search and if I find any more prospects on the net or otherwise, I'll send them your way!

-Mark

Pete- that Nova looks like a deal for a restorer or flipper! Its beyond my abilities to reach its potential.  You are right about my purchase , it will grab me when its right.

Mark - I know that you werent helping for money. The feeling you get by helping someone else with no expectations of anything in return, is a great feeling. It may sound like an Oprahism, but when you give under these circumstances, it gets returned to you tenfold.....its karma.  Thats precisely why I want to give. I will offer the fee to the finder privately, and if its not accepted, I will donate it to CP, so more can benefit.

 - for example, just a couple of days ago I overheard an old woman in the smoking area outside my building having a dilemma of how she would manage to drop her daughter off several hours away with only 20$ gas money for the weekend. I was having a smoke trying to remember the last time I had $20 for the weekend, its not that long ago.  I waited til she was alone and handed her a $20 to help her weekend. I had never met her before. Her first look at me told me I was a weirdo. Her second look was worth way more than $20 to me. It left me with a fantastic feeling for the rest of the day, a feeling you cant buy at any store. I have already been more than repaid for this gesture by multiple people who dont know me, one being Mark. Canadian Poncho is the only website that I know of that operates on the priciples of sharing when it could charge a fee. I read somewhere here on CP about a hoist being given for free to a young fella starting out. Some would believe he is crazy, as he could easily get a few hundred bucks for it. (not sure who it was) There are multiple stories just like it here. I think he had something done for him in the past, and has learned where peace of mind comes from. Sorry to be so long winded and I already know I am different, but I am 100% Canadian.  Please dont give me credit for giving her money, I only mentioned it because I wish I had lived this way sooner, and feel compelled to pass it on.  I'm proud to call myself a member here.smile

one other thing....if you dont have enough gas for the weekend either...I've already done my good deed.

Again, thanks for the offer. smile My first thoughts would be that you are spending enough money to get the car as it is... save the money to help pay for your transportation costs!

I'll say right now, if you end up purchasing a car that I found the ad for and you insist on offering a finder's fee then please donate it to the Canadian Poncho website.  I'm sure I've gotten more value than that out of this site since I've been coming here and this would be a way of giving something back to a good cause that many can enjoy and learn from!

Barry your wife called and it's no-go on the L78 Nova!.
Just kidding brother but even without asking I do know it's a no-go w/ my own sweetheart!.

If I knew before I'd forgotten your L72 Biscayne was B'Brn?.
Maybe Tony had told me, I forget but I really like the color myself!.

I wondered if the Nova was the same one as advertised last year?.
Is it less $ now and different pics?.

I remember seeing pics of someone on the Yenko sites beautiful L78 Nova in B'Brn...maybe there's more than one there?.
Is the survivor L78 car Jeff sold to Rob B'Brn...I mean Rob w/ the old lady car & 1000 Hp on tap!.

Did buddy w/ the L78 Camaro get ahold of you yet?.

Whoa!  Nice find!  If all they say is true, that is one heck of a nice "survivor" car.  Not many original paint cars around.  If that was a GTO it woul probably be 3 or 4 times that price?...
