Air Cleaner assembly feedback requested...

I've been struggling with this for a while now.  I have a crusty old chrome aftermarket "open" air cleaner assembly on my 275 hp 327 that I am not happy with at all.  I would like something more period correct, but at the same time something that allows good air flow (and no PCV).

-I love the L-79 chrome air cleaner, but it would seem wrong to use one on a 275 hp model.

-There is the one that most sources indicate came on the non AC model.  My concern is that it may not have great air flow.

-Same can be said of the one more commonly found on the 65 model... maybe not great airflow.  (In fact I would prefer the 65 Impala model with the larger intake.)

Ideally I think I would like a plain black L-79 type.  But I'm not willing to fork out for the price of a chromed one that I would then paint.

Any thoughts as to what you feel I should go with?...
thx in advance for the feedback

If it was mine, in the interest of keeping it looking stock, I'd do the smooth one but that is just me.

Geoff, you could also do what I did years ago on my L79 Nova clone.

Find two old style air cleaners and weld the second snorkel on one to make your own. I chromed mine but even better if you paint it black!

Good point.  If I could weld, would the result be much different from a Camara dual snorkle?

the smooth one is the right one for a 275 hp 66, unless you are making big power the original one would be fine,

I've built a dual snorkle with ram air ducts under the front bumper with nothing but junk parts from a wrecking yard.  Bought 2 junk air cleaner bases that had the same snorkles and cut the snorkle off one and attached it to the other with 4 pop rivets and some sealant.  I wasn't too concerned about how it looked and wanted a cheap cold air intake.  REDNECK RAM AIR biggrin

I think your air cleaner is made (at least in our heads!) Geoff.

Man, I wish you lived closer, I'd weld it up for you in a heartbeat. Simpe enough to do if you know someone with a 110 mig though. Just drill a few holes in the air cleaner where the snorkel flange will be, weld up from the inside of the air cleaner and VOILA, it will even look stock from the outside, no welds showing!

As much as I love the stock stuff, I think the chrome L-79 dual snorkel would be a great choice. It is period correct, of fine lineage, is functional & unusual.

BTW I don't believe that any of the aircleaners that you show are the correct ones for a Candian L30. The Canadian L30 through 1966 used something that looked more like a U.S. Pontiac air cleaner.

I would make a homemade dual snorkel and put the 65 aircleaner lid on it,paint it all black. I made one for my wagon and cut off the thermostat things and smoothed them over but it doesnt fit under my hood. I also like the impala one with the bigger sorkel.

If the feeling is that this is the very same as a '66 Chevelle 327 275hp air cleaner assembly, then yes I would be interested (as it would be good to have regardless of what dual snorkle set up I might also go with.)  Is it???...

thx

I agree, other than the chrome.  I think a black one would identify it as a poor man's well breathing 327.

You may be right.  Not sure though how to prove it?

edit:  Interesting to see that the April 2009 feature car has the aircleaner that you mention.

Is it the original?  (Maybe, maybe not, as the VC's seem to have possibly been changed?)
Thanks for the feedback everyone.  More thoughts are welcome!...

I hope you don't mind me reviving and old thread.  I've been looking for an original air cleaner assembly for my '66 327 Beaumont 4 barrel.  While the reproduction companies seem to be in agreement with which assembly came on the American Chevelle 327, there are those that feel it was not the same as the Beaumont (as per the picture from CdnGMfan.)
Me...I don't have a clue what was on mine when I bought it almost 30 years ago, but having said that, the following somehow seems more familiar to me than the widely accepted Chevelle assembly.
I currently have the opportunity to purchase the following (see attached picture).  I believe it to be the same that CdnGMfan has referred to.
Any additional/final thoughts from the experts???
thx
gw

I'm also wondering where the drawing of the last image came from (as the ram exhaust manifold was probably not on the Beaumont 327?) Is it in reference to a '66 Beaumont 327? I'm trying to read the VCD's and I believe they may say Beaumont, but that might be wishful thinking on my part LOL.

I love the black base chrome top dual snorkel look myself. The original is a little plain.

A chrome one of these?  I've heard it mentioned that there was a chrome dress-up package for the 327 which included the chrome VCD's...
