No Tomato Sauce This Year

Things were looking well for my tomatoes this year. I had tried fish mulch in the vegetable garden this year and it looked like I was going to have a bumper crop. Then, just like last year, disaster struck. They got hit with "Late Blight" and I've had to throw away about 50lbs of tomatoes. I just finished pulling out all the plants. What a shame. Those tomatoes that ripened before the blight hit were the best ones I've tasted in a long time. Our potato plants also died however I managed to get about 30lbs worth of potaoes. I still have a lot of butternut squash, peppers and cukes. I'm still dissapointed with the tomatoes. I was looking forward to Connie making a bunch of homemade tomato sauce! I'm going to have to plant in a different location next year as the spores will likely still be in the ground.

I move the plants around, i've heard rotate in a 3 year cycle. We had 8 plants and have had a good crop to get six small jars of tomato sauce. The green peppers were better than last year but still small. No corn, didn't work this year, not much in the way of lettuce, beans and peas either and i dug out the pumpkin plants. I think it was all the weeds, i haven't been diligent this year in keeping up with them. Next year i want to get some good top soil and put the netting down and cut through where i plant.

Randy, I have had good luck using straw as a mulch. It decomposes slowly and is great for keeping the weeds away. I didn't use a mulch last year and the garden was a real mess. I got the bales of straw from a local farmer really cheap. I have 3 left over for next year which will be plenty. I did some reading on tomato blight and learned a lot of things and realized I did a lot of things wrong this year...

My wife grows them to make salsa. We were fortunate to have a decent crop this year but living in the middle of a farming community, we don't have to look far when we are short of garden goodies!

Haha. We got a lot of potatoes this year from the small ones I missed picking last year.

Best year yet for tomatoes for me. Tiny Tims seem to work best.

The Zukes aren't too bad either, when the local wildlife is not eating them.

Nothing like tomato sauce made from ripe ones picked from your own yard! Cannot grow tomatoes in Florida, sun burns them or bugs eat them, bah!

Todd, try again next year -- or make friends with a neighbor that has no blight and when her crop comes in, snag one of the extra bushels, eh?

Tons of cherry and plum tomatoes (regular or beefstake ones don't grow too well here).
We are soooooo sick of green beans, yellow beans, and swiss chard, we have them/it growing up our ying-yangs! We are giving a lot away.
Good crop of peas, beets, lettuce, squashes, and zucchini.
A nice crop also, of sage, oregano, parsley, cilantro, and onion/garlic chives.
I didn't grow basil this year, because I still have a ton of pesto frozen.
Potatoes we don't worry about!biggrin
