oil additives?? no Zinc? what do you use?

So,  just looking for opinions,  we keep hearing that the new oils have reduced Zinc , and that our traditional falt tappet cams will take a beating due to the lack of lubrication in NEW oils .

modern roller cams do not require this type of lubrication

so now what , what additives or oils are you using???

my 454 BBC wants to know

I am told that the best thing to put in is GM additive, EOS. I see all the car guys on the forums saying that only the Canadian EOS has the zinc in it. I am wondering if a guy should buy a few cases of the stuff because if it's done in the US, it will happen here too.

Valvolin has a high zinc oil so does lucus oil. Comp recomends their break in additive for every oil change.

You can by-pass all the different "Oil Additives" and use Diesel Engine Oil. Available in many weights and at all parts stores. Even CTC and Walmart..............

Is there any truth to the high detergent in diesel oils, and that older engines will experience high oil consumption after they are cleaned out??

Ive heard the shell rotella  was about the best.10/40 Thats what I used to break the cam in on the wagon. It was a 613/648 solid flat tappet. No problems,of coarse I took out the inner springs. Now have a 540 solid roller and the cars faster.

I may be wrong but I thought the zinc was removed from diesel oil due to new emission standards. Royal Purple is a good oil for old engines.

Hey guys I work at an engine machine shop and we use comp cams part number 159 with shell 15/40 diesel oil for our cam break ins and continue with the 15/40 after the 500km break in period. We have found the AC delco EOS softens the valve stem seals causing oil consumption!

I used to like the idea of using EOS, at least you know what you are getting, but now there are good oils to use for running after break-in, i'd still use EOS for break-in...(it contains other additives that you don't necessarily need/want after break-in). Unfortunately an oil that had enough zinc last year, may have changed...

Look for a minimum of 1200-1300ppm zddp for stock to mild flat tappet perf perf cams and higher than 1400 for bigger FT cams and heavy spring rates etc., Valvoline VR1 race oil is one with good zinc and detergents (at least it used to!)... also Summit Racing Street & Strip® Premium Racing Oil with 1800ppm...(rebottled spectro oil)

I wouldn't ideally run rotella i think they dropped their zinc levels in '09, also heard that diesel oils run more detergents which could counteract the zddp (according to Joe Gibbs, and Porsche). I'm sure it's fine for most set-ups though...
