My Beaumont SD back in 1966

Here is a snapshot of my 1966 SD  327  4 speed, taken in Kamloops BC while on a trip  Easter 1966.
I traded in my 1965  SD 327   350hp 4 speed  for this car late 1965  at Carter Moters in West Vancouver where I had originally bought the '65
I liked the '65 hubcaps better than the '66 ones so I  put them on this car

Great looking car. Why did you trade in the 65 L79 car ?

Great vintage photo! The 65 caps do look nice. I am very fond of them too.

Funny that some guys will ask why you would have traded the L-79 car but I'm sure I'd have done the same thing. I definately like the body lines of the 66 and 67 Beaumonts better than the 64 & 65's. As well, how do you say no to a red 66 with 327 4 spd?

You know back in those times GM had the buying public eating out of their hands. My dad never kept a car more than three years, he'd just go back and get the newest Pontiac out. They were just used cars then. Hindsight is 20/20. I was just saying tonight my dad traded a 1970 Tempest two door post with a Pontiac 350 265 HP, on a 73 LeMans Sport Coupe. To him he was upgrading. That car was upgraded to a 76 Grand Lemans which was upgraded to a 79 Grand Prix etc...

Great vintage photo by the way.

Wow !  Lots of comments and questions.

First off;  why trade in an L79  65 SD  for  the 66 SD ?
Way back then  we didn't really know what we it was that we had.  Hindsight is 20/20
The '65  was built for nothing but straight line speed...no frills about that car.  It had no power steering,  no power brakes...hard to manuver in slow traffic..just nice on the highway.  A bit frustrating  as it became known in our area as unbeatable..so no one would come alongside at a light.
So when the beautiful 1966's  came out..I ordered up that red one with black interior  with power steering, power brakes, rear defroster, tach, 4 speed, posi, etc
It sure looked a lot better than the silver 65  with black buckets,  and the 66 buckets were more comfortable to.
My "king of the town" race days were over though.  I took it to a local drag strip and did some runs;  with the 3.08 rear end it would burn rubber (in two black strips)  all through 1st gear, through 2nd gear, and into the beginning of 3rd gear... the small stock tires (735 x 14  2 ply tires)  sure didn't help any...so  at the end of the 1/4 mile..I was clocked at 90 mph  in 14.9 sec  in 3rd gear  reving 5,000 rpm.

I am sure that  3.55 rear end  with slicks and headers would have  helped out a lot...but  back then there was a  young wife and a baby to feed and look after...no money left over for that.

Question about weight in the trunck to give it that look.  No real weight... just a few suitcases and the parking lot was slanted a bit

One day while I was out driving it..a 66 Cheeta pulled up alongside  and we had a little chat, so I did have the experience of seeing one up close when it was new..one of the dark green ones with the 427.  i knew better than to suggest  anything serious from a stop light.
Also, someone mentioned about the frequency of trading cars back then....
The 65  was my first new car, the 66 the second, a 68 beaumont wagon with 327 PG was the third,  a 70 lemans SW factory order 400 High Comp 4 barrel was the fourth  and after that I just bought second hand cars...my latest being a 2004 GMC Yukon XL  SLT  bought in the fall of '04  with 18,000km  which I love driving
As you can see,  I have managed to stick and stay with the  Pontiac/GMC brand throughout my life.

Before the '65....I owned a 1959  Pont Parisienne  2 door hdtp  and before that a 1956  American 2 dr hdtp Chieftain   and  a 1950 American 4 dr Chieftian that my dad bought brand new in 1950.

Sorry about mentioning a couple of american pontiac's on this forum site.

i hope that you all will also forgive me for mentioning that i also  owned a few Chevy's
1955 2 dr Bel Air hdtp , a 1956 Bel Air 4 dr hdtp  and a 1957 Bel Air 4 dr hdtp  all of them bought and sold for  between 1,000 and 2,000 dollars.

Back then  nobody knew that they were going to be a collectable item.  They were used everyday as good looking transportation...not show pieces with collector plates

Oh..a slight correction on the original post  for the 66 SD
I bought it  and the 65  from Conroy Motors in West Vancouver...not  Carter motors.

Later on I bought the 1970 LeMans SW  from Carter Motors  in Burnaby BC

I have a few question for you Super Chief. Did your 66 come from the factory with dual exhaust? If so, do you remember if it had the resonators? Did the tailpipes turn down & exit out back by the bumper? Was it the same system on your 65?

O.K., I'll stop now. Three questions are all I'm allowed.

Very nice car! Thank you for posting the picture and the story behind it.

The '66  SD   had  the 327   275 hp motor.  The only 327 available that year. (after '65 had  three   327's available)
The exhaust system was dual pipes to the center of the car  then merged into a single pipe  then into the muffler  and then right before the rear bumper  the exhaust pipe went into a resonator (looked like a small muffler)  It was common practise to remove the resonator(s)

The 65 had dual exhaust pipes, dual mufflers and dual resonators.  I can't say if that was the way it came from the factory  as  I didn't order it up.  It was on the lot at Conroy  with 2,000 miles on it....heard that it was ordered uip by a salesman.
Cost me $4,000.00

For the question of the exhaust pipe exiting...... yes, it  came out of the resonator  and bent down and toward the right rear corner...more to the side  than to the back.

No;  i don't recognize any of these as being the one I saw.  The one I saw was a 1966  Green one with black top.  The only green ones listed above, seem to be 1967 's
