I always USED to call it "The Bible" and used to always say, "Going to the states this weekend for hamburgers and Auto Traders"! It just isn't worth buying anymore and the website is even more pathetic than the paper issue in my opinion. I even sent them a rant letter last year about all these supposed "rotisserie restoration" vehicles that were on the same webpage as much as 6 or 8 times and that they ALL had such ridiculous prices that they had to be scams! For example: FOR SALE! 1969 Camaro Indy Pace Car! Rotisserie restoration just completed. 40,000 ORIG. MILES! No expense spared! $6,599.00!!! Or a Corvette, or a '56 Chev or whatever. Have any of you fellas seen what I'm talking about when you've gone to the Auto Trader site? It's for that reason I just don't bother with either their website or paper issue anymore. They're BOTH JUST GARBAGE!
I missed a super bargain on a 64 GTO convertible this summer due to no longer buying the book-at one time I had every book here from 1983 forward. I bought the last two but it just isn't the same excitment as years ago-Todd is right theres more new ads on kijiji in one day !
It's unfortunate but true that print materials are becoming obslolete. I still buy the book, but there are so few ads now that they have a lot of nearly blank pages.
Some of you in Ontario may be familair with the TriAd classified publication. Up to 3 or 4 years ago it was full of old car stuff. It was where I found my 62 Parisienne. When iIwas in Ontario this summer, I couldn't believe how small the publication has become, and how little old car stuff is in there.
Ahh...to reminisce about how everyone was on 'equal footing' for thursday mornings buy and sell and traders... now to get the deals you have to be online 24/7!! ...it took some of the fun out of it!! at the same time, now i have the opportunity to be the first caller on something 10 hours away and 2 states over in another country!
I still get almost every issue. There are still many old farts that never got into computers and never will. It seems that the average 'old fart car dude' doesnt use computers at all! Obviously if you are and old fart car dude, and you are reading this, you are the exception. Many get relatives to post their cars, and its just a matter of time that the paper copies will be gone.
I was going to mention this in my earlier post. I guess that's why the paper company who I worked 32 years for is now in bankruptcy protection and my pension is threatened. The printed word has got left behind.
I used to buy the Auto Trader all the time, but I lost all my respect when I used them to try and sell a car. I shelled out an unreasonable amount of $ for an average B/W published (and internet) ad that ran 1 month. Their customer support was terrible, and in the end I wound up getting more responses (and selling it) through a free Kijiji ad.
Sorry, no disrespect Timbuk. I subscribe to a half dozen car magazines, and I have no plans to cancel any of them. The internet is great, but nothing beats the feeling of reading a good magazine cover-to-cover.
I have a couple magizine subscriptions and buy a few others when I see them at the store. Have to agree with ZigZag about reading them cover to cover. Even the ads are worth reading to see what's new. Besides that, there is no CP in the washroom, so magizines are a must.
I have the first few issues and in fact most of them since the OCT first came out in 1982. I don't know why I've kept them, but it is interesting to look back over 15, 20, 25 years to see what was on the market, and what the prices were.
