Ontario Driver's Licence Rant

I need to express my strong objection to Preem McGuinty's proposed legislation to up the driver's age to 18.  For the love of God, am I going to have to chauffeur my kids around into their adulthood?  At the rate we're going I'll be lucky if they move out by the time they're 40!  Is the Ontario Government committed to instituting arrested development?  When are people going to be permitted to grow up?  And by the way, am I the only person on the planet who thinks that Premier Dalton McGuinty looks like Lee Harvey Oswald.  Americans:  Google his image.  It's frightening.

Thank you, and have a good day.

When I was 15 my dad was sending me 17 miles along HWY 124 in Onatrio to get gas for the boat at the General store, it was a '73 LeMans Sport Coupe I was driving, imagine that today!

I hear ya Ray. I (at age 16-with my beginners license) was also driving my mom to the hospital every day during the month of December in a 77 LeMans Sport Coupe when my dad had a brain anurism. Mom was too upset and tired to drive. It would have been a real problem if I couldn't have done it.

Total foolishness and what more could we expect from the McGuilty goverment!!!

It's tough enough wangling your way through the insurance thing these days but my kids are all rolling nicely through their driver's training courses and the current Ontario licencing system..

Is there something w/ the system that's broken and needs $ spent trying to 'fix' it?.

I have a question along the same lines.  Early in the summer, there was news that the RCMP was going to be stopping and fining vehicles,  particularly in Ontario, that didn't have their original engines in them.
For that reason I didn't attend Autofest this year or any other events in Canada.  I didn't think it would be too hard to notice a tangerine Acadian with full exhaust but loud enough to be noticed.
Anybody know of anyone being stopped this summer?

Norm, the RCMP does not police Ontario, rather the Ontario Provincial Police does.
I am not aware of anything such as you mention happening but perhaps other members know.

very unlikely, would require alot of effort and Resources, that

would be usually put toward regular type enforecment, ie a speeding

fine would generate the same revenue with way less effort.

The mto people might pick it up as part of a smog check, but thats

not really what they are looking at, it again is usually way more

straight forward, ie, no cats or someting smilar. ontario requires

like 5 straight minutes of black smoke at the tail pipe to even set

the wheels in motion for inspection at the roadside, the drive clean program

is a much easier way to get extra money and ensure cars have their smog equip.

they wont do the test without the equipment and usually wont pass without it,

most off the old stuff is exempt from drive claen, so not a big worry.

its about dollars, having the mto check for smog parts is time consuming, and

expensive, but frcing u to pay someone else to ensure its present and working

is way cheaper  (drive clean), been on a few mto roadside smog checks, never heard

the question asked or even brought up, its cats, mufflers, pcv present, have

a nice day

Keep it under your hat.  McGinty would love the idea.  Remember the forced snow tire idea.  Imagine storing 4 sets of tires -- like, in the living room???  Duh!

They got one guy in Lindsay on his way to the cruise, stopped for visual emm. equipment check, then they invoked the new street racing law that states if officer thinks car is equiped to street race or suspected of it the vehicle can be confiscated. The guys said it was a "mid " 80's Olds cutlass, with B/B Chevy "blown & nitrious!! Pulled the plates & towed it to yard "apparently"!!!! Yep The "NANNY Province & Premier "DAD" gets another criminal [Cutlass] of the streets!!! Thats the 4th one I know of thats either been taken off the road or fined, but the 1st. on the "street racing law"

That is crazy. My dad had me driving the farm truck on the field by the time I was 12. I was to small to throw bails so he taught me how to drive. It was a 59 Chevy 1 ton 4 speed with a flat deck and if I jerked when I was started off he would bang on the roof. By the time I was 15 I could drive a 3/4 ton crew cad with a 4 horse trailer and back in pretty much any where. Till this day I can still back a trailer in better than most people I know. If it wasn't for the training I got when I was young I probably would be like most of my friends and just go where I could drive threw. If kids are not taught at a young age when will they learn once they have moved out of home and have no one to teach them. OH right I forgot kids don't move out of home any more.

I don't. I pay 4g a year for insurance (clean record). If I were to get a winter car, they add a lot more. Insurance BS

I asked my son to drive the pickup around one day when we were cutting firewood in a farmer's field. He was only 13 or so and was quite surprised at me even asking. He got pretty good at it, best time to learn is when you are young.

that would be exactly what would stand out for this kind of thing
mid eighties cutlass should have all the smog goodies that are usually
all missing and replaced with a blower and nitrious, it wouldnt be
the fact the the eingine might be a diffrent year that would send up
the flag, it would be all the other stuff, like a blower on a street car
