That type of behavior is no longer tolerated on any job. Back in the day this would of been the norm on a construction site. When I was 19 and started in construction the very first day I went to work I was surprised when the boss said lunch and every one piled in the truck to go to the bar and have a couple quick beers and watch the dancers then back to work.

For crying out loud it's their lunch break, thier own time. Last time I checked drinking beer was not illegal, in fact drinking beer and driving a car is not even illegal. If these guys show up intoxicated then that is another matter.

Typcal Bush Leagure Fox reporting.

I agree with you Ray. How many senior management are out there having paid lunches with a couple of drinks on company time . An employees lunch hour and break time is their time and they can do whatever they want as long as it is not illegal. It is another matter if the breaks are paid by the company however.

I agree it's their own time. Might have been better to do it in a restaurant and not in a public park or in the drivers seat.. Also, I don't think those were Marlboros they were toking on..

It is their lunch but are you going to tell me it's OK to chug back enough beer to blow over then smoke a joint and head back to work. If any of those guy blew a breath test they would fail. If they had to pass a drug test for work there is no way they would pass. I know as a boss I would not tolerate this. They would all be with out a job.
Ray as a higher up in a organization I can not believe you do not see any thing wrong with this . If your reductionist was to do this and come back smelling like beer and weed are you telling me this would be ok with you. I have had both drug and alcohol problems in my live and I know first hand that it impairs your actions not only at time of consumption but for days to come.
I am not saying that people should not be able to do what they want on their own time but in my eyes it is obvious they guys have a problem. If you can not make it threw the day and must race out on your brake to catch a buzz you have a problem.
I have a uncle who was making well over 200,000 a year but he was just like these guys. When he left for work in the morning he would pack his lunch and there was always a six pack in it. He is now 61 years old and lives in a old folks residence as he can not care for him self any more. He was a very smart man and could of have a job with any oil company he wanted. When he wrote his tests he was always # 1 in his class but he blew it
Sorry for the rant but I just do not see how any one can see how this is ok.

It does seem odd there is no drug/alcohol testing for guys running power tools, machinery and equipment.

I would think that they would have a rule about drinking on company property at any time. The company I worked for did. ( CP Rail).

I used to do the grounds maintenance at a certain plant in Oshawa, and we used to have to clean up a ton of bottles in the bushes/hedges each week.
We also had to dispose of a few used condoms, and ladies panties now & then???
I guess it is fine to have a liquid lunch when are in an office environment?, but once you are using machinery shouldn't be allowed.

Most Unionized facilities would have language in their collective agreements that reads something like this under the article for discipline, "being under the influence of alchol or substance is grounds for immediate discharge or suspension"

Well ...

One job I had, we had a couple of contract computer guys who used to work at Schlitz in Milwaukee, and back then (70's) the taps were always turned on for employees, they'd have a couple of drafts each break, no need to stop for a frosty on the way home since they'd already had 6-8, eh? They sure missed that job. They both still had the big beer bellys as a constant reminder. smile.gif

First job I had out of high school (before I went to college, eraly 60's) was on an assembly line, made washers and dryers. There was a place in the basement where you could go and scrunch under some piled-up stuff, there was a blanket there, you could get a nice nap if the foreman wasn't around. Not that I ever did that, ha!

Assembly line work is the worst kind of job, even worse than retail where you have to deal with censored.gif customers - on the line, the repetition drives you nuts. I kind of empathize with those guys, let loose a little when you can. One tall boy will not make you drunk for returning to work. Although I am not so sure about the reefer, seems to me it makes your mind wander and would detract from work ...

Surprised those guys did not punch out that TV guy who came up to them.

As My Dad always said, " You can drink all you want when the work is done."
You are endangering yourself and innocent others in the work place. My place of work is going so far as to limit what I can and can't do when I'm away on official business after hours ON MY OWN TIME.

That's going too far.  I'm a citizen not a subject.

Iknow they won't loose their jobs, the union will stand up for them to the end. I've seen it happen here, "they have a problem" so they go to re-hab, then a mth. later back at work they are "at it" again. Union wil sau again "they have a problem" & on it goes because our "charter of right" says you can't fire someone with "problems" so on it goes, the employee's know they are "covered" so why change??????? If you work outside the union you would likey get "one" shot at getting "clean" then your gone!! Most individuals can't fight it in court.

there are 20,000 people dead sober whom would kill for a high paying job with benefits, myself included....they got exactly what they deserve
I remember many days working on the line next to a guy whom was drunk and or lit...and watched him operate heavy machinery and then get behind a 4000lb vehicle while my wife and kid was on the road....so yeah...not one ounce of pitty from me. They are grown men and knew exactly what they were doing.

You will notice I never voiced too much of an opinion when I posted this. It was more an information thread about the situation. However, I do have to say put me on the list of people who wouldn't want to be around a group of guys working on a line when their skills are hampered by their lunchtime habits. I gotta think the potential for injury is pretty high!
