RE: 1954 Pontiac

Question #2

I have 2 - 54 rims off my car, and 2 off of my parts car.  the 2 off of my car have some "inserts" as shown in the pictures.  What are these inserts for?

Mine had none of those..Looks alot like some type of Clip to hold the full caps? Or trim rings?

They arent for the full caps, and I cant see how they would hold trim rings, theyre very light gauge.

Either way, I took them out (most of which were broken anyway) before getting the rims sand blasted.

When I was picking up my rear wheel cylinders, I did talk to Norm at Mid Canada Suspension about the outer rocker panel not reaching the inner, and he said the floor pan spans the two. For now, because I dont want things to snowball on me, im going to patch in a strip between the two, something that can be easily removed when I do take out the seats, and do the floor pan.

The rims came out really nice, how's the rocker coming along?

The rims did come out nice.  I didnt think of it at the time, but I should have brought in one more, for the spare.  I guess that will come later.   Next for the rims is the POR 15.  Well, DOM 16 actually.  The guys at Rondex talked me into the DOM 16 for my needs in this application over the POR 15.  I guess we will see how it turns out.

I may have to work on the rims before finishing the rockers.  The girlfriend isnt liking the parts collection in the bedroom that much.  I think car parts add a little something to the room.  She doesnt.  smile   I dont want them out rusting up in the garage though.

As for the rockers, I have a little more fine tune cutting to do yet, and need to pick up some sheet metal to fit in before welding it up.

Nah, I think ill keep her.  She said she would draw the line at storing the parts car engine in the kitchen though.  I can live with that.  Theres always one of the kids rooms!  :)

Your rim will be sandbalst before coating ( I suppose)? You will use tubeless tire (I suppose too)? Your rim are the riveted type rim (yes I suppose again...)?

I suggest you, before putting back your tire, to put a coat or two of urethane paint or something similar inside the rim, preventing air to going out by rivet.

The rims were sandblasted before powder coating them.  I was planning on going tubeless, yes.  The rims are riveted.  Im glad you mentioned that about the urethane paint.  I wouldnt have done that!  I would have just thought the powder coating would have sealed it.

I don't know very much powder coating, maybe it's enough to seal the rivet, but maybe not, I would not take chance, spray it to avoid problem later.

either that, or just put tubes in there.  It doesnt look like urethane paints adhere to powder coating very well.

I'm going to say they were aftermarket inserts to keep larger rocks and gravel from getting inbetween the wheel and the full wheel cover.

Never seen them before, so i would think either homemade or aftermarket

Re: the springs around the front drum..I thought the spring was to help dampen any harmonic vibration. And the torn shock...yup, been there and have the Teeshirt, only with mine it was a lower eyelet on the rear shock that ripped loose.

Sadly, it's time to let the 54 go. Too many projects and a busy life in general are making it too hard to keep working on her. Here's a link to the Kijiji ad if anyone is interested: http://www.kijiji.ca/v-classic-cars/winnipeg/pontiac-laurentien/1036416932?enableSearchNavigationFlag=true I've actually got 1953 Bob from this site looking after the sale for me, so emailing through the kijiji ad, or emailing bobdubldr@gmail.com would be the best ways to look into it. Thanks Ken

What I'd also like to do, because of the people that I've talked to on this site, and how friendly and helpful you all are, is if a member of this site ends up buying the cars, I will donate $500 to the site from the sale to help keep the site running smoothly.
