Granatelli Motor Sports Mass Air Flow Sensor

Well this is for the guys with 90's 5.7 engines, I'm thinking Firebirds LT-1 , GMC Vortecs.

I picked up this Granatelli Mass Air Flow Senor for the Suburban. My MAF was carboned up and looking kind of rusty, even though it's some alloy.Granetelli say 22 extra HP, 47% more air flow, improved ignition and injector timing, installs in minutes.

65Camino and I did this in about 90 seconds, two clamps and one electronic connector.

We fire up the old Vortec and right away we hear a different exhaust note and a free flowing rush into the plenum. NICE. At idle 65 Camino said it sounds like a muscle car!

Anyway all I can say is does this thing ever deliver. You can feel the power addition just tipping around town but out on the highway it sounds like my hood is going to get sucked in and the shifts are crisp and throttle response is improved tremendously. Kick it down at 100 and OMG does this 6,000 lbs bemouth ever haul. It comes on so strong that car crushing territory is reached in about 3 second. Almost too much response to use in everyday driving.

I thought I'd share this experience with this product. If you are looking for some easy ponies here they are. I'd say 22 HP gain is conservative on my engine based on my initial driving.

Cool! Does he make a MAF for any other engines - say for the 3800SC?

Check out the web site here. There is a listing for the 3.8 V6, and others like the Roadmaster, Fleetwood, Impala on top of the Camaro, Firebird Corvette and Trucks.

PS: Don't tell Carl, they have products for the 2010 Camaro too shh.gif

Click here for 4.8 model. It says up to 25 HP on the 4.8!

I see them online for $208. That is still only 10 bucks per pony. I got lucky we were at a local car club swap and I saw this shinny red thing lying there in an open box, it looked new but was apart in three pieces so we had to put it back together - swap meet price $20, time to put together 2 minutes, time to install 90 second = Hee Haw and a kick in the pants.

Even though it is red it is green, I can feel from the throttle that the car is more efficient...Im' serious, not kidding, it just breathes and flows so much easier so it must be saving gas. I am sure Miller would approve of the mod but not the 6,000 lb truck it's in biggrin

Thinking about spraying the thing cast colour, what ya think?

I got a reply back from Granatelli. Unfortunately they won't work on SC 3800s.

Gotta ask this: Are these gents related to Andy Granatelli of STP fame? The next Generation?

I would thnk they are related to the original.

Todd, can you put a open element air filter on your engine? I did that on my Bonneville and the 3.8 reacted very positively. I tucked it down low behind the driver's headlight area. First I removed the OEM air box, what a waste of space, then I route my own plumbing down there. I put a small hole in the plumbing and kept the air temp sensor intact. Car is long gone, wish I had a photo. It worked great. That car also had dual exhaust outlets on each side of the bumper and sounded real sweet.

I could do that. Gutting the airbox is another option. It does have a K&N filter which is overdue for a cleaning. When I had my 97 Regal I did all the tricks- smaller pulley, U bend removed from the exhaust, flowmaster mufflers, cold air intake. It really woke that engine up...and then the transmission blew...

When you get the product in your hand it's really no secret to what is going on.

My OEM MAF had a double honey comb screen and a thick bar across the centre diameter. The outside diameter of both are the same but the Granetelli has less material all round and no wide bar or honeycomb screen so it is easy to see what they are doing. Increasing the diameter of the bore and eliminating obstructions. It is pretty simple, more air flow means sensor adjusts engine management to produce more power.  They say 47% more air flow and when you have both units in your hand you can see how as I explained above.
