New Toronto bylaw # of cars

I'm just listening to radio here in Calgary and I'm hearing that there is a new bylaw in Toronto that limits the number of vehicles you can park on your property.
They are saying that if you have a single garage you can only have one vehicle in the garage and one on the driveway. Regardless of how large your driveway is.
Could this be true? What if you have no garage?
Fine up to $5,000.

Um, sounds right.  Toronto is a silly place.  First of the month is brutal if you own rental properties.  This is the time when departing tenants leave their crap on the lawn for the landlord to deal with.  City inspectors are on the prowl and at the ready with their stupid little clip boards ready to write you up and fine you.  Last month our neighbours ran out and had to tell the doughhead to stop writing because my husband was taking the first load to the dump (in the rusty truck).  If we could have teleported it we would have, believe me.  It's a scam to raise money.  Silly people.  Silly place.  Which is why our family home is in Durham where the sensible people are, 427Carl excepted.

Sounds stupid enough to be true. This guy Miller is giving it to car owners right to the end of his term. What a piece of work he is.

The leader in the race Rob Ford says he is going to repeal the Miller car tax of $60 per registered car in Toronto.

I have heard about this by-law before. City experts say a driveway is a right of way to your garage which is for parking, driveway is not for parking, it is or gaining access to parking.

Anyway at some point the City road allowance comes into play. It is 66 feet so often if a road is say 30 feet wide there is 36 feet that is still road. If your driveway encroaches on that extra 36 feet and you park on it you get a ticket even though it isn't a paved road as such but is deemed roadway by City nits.

As already stated it is just another means to get money into the coffers and just another way that Toronto looks like a complete waste of time to the rest of the country. I'm getting ashamed to come from here!

Here is the full story....

CTV TORONTO

New bylaw limits driveway parking to two vehicles

New Toronto zoning bylaw will put a limit on how many cars you can park in your driveway.

New Toronto zoning bylaw will put a limit on how many cars you can park in your driveway.

ctvtoronto.ca

Parking in Toronto just got a little more complicated thanks to a new bylaw that restricts how many vehicles homeowners can park on their driveways.

City council quietly passed the regulation, part of the new harmonized zoning bylaw, at its last meeting of the summer, CTV has learned. The bylaw took effect Oct. 1.

The law allows residents with a single-car garage to park one vehicle in the garage and one on the driveway. Those with double garages may park two vehicles in the garage and two on the driveway.

The change has sparked some debate among Torontonians.

"It's nonsense," Scarborough resident Sal Lamantia told CTV Toronto's Naomi Parness. "In terms of my own driveway, it should be my own decision."

Others say the new rule keeps streets looking cleaner.

The law was created after some residents complained others were turning their driveways into parking lots, city officials said.

The city will rely on complaints in enforcing the restriction, officials said. Fines will be determined in court, and could reach up to $5,000.

The regulation is being grandfathered in, meaning residents used to packing several cars on the driveway are still allowed to do so.

They'll have to show they've been doing it for a while, which could prove difficult, said Lance Cumberbatch, director of the municipal standards and licensing division.

Residents buying or building new homes will be most affected by the change.

At least one resident has appealed the bylaw, sending the matter to the Ontario Municipal Board for review.

With a file from CTV Toronto's Naomi Parness

All I know is someone on here lives close to me and has 3 or 4 cars in front of his garage. The Officials say that if you 've been doing it a long time and can prove it you will be ok, they will only act on complaints from October 1st forward. no

News to me. At any given time I have at least three in my driveway. Yet, all my neighbours park on the street. Yes, they have garages. Yes they have space for more then one car in the driveway. Yet, these lazy SOB's park on the street. Living on a narrow street it can make it difficult to drive on. Even more so when winter occurs!!!!

Smoke is coming from my ears!!!

Take a breath honey, you're stroking out.

The people in Leaside are going to lose their minds over this.

Hmmm... it's not OK to park 4 cars in your private driveway out of the way of everybody.

It is OK to park 1 in the driveway and 3 in the street.

confuse

Somebody better check the inventory of confiscated weed at the city PD, 'cuz I think some city politicians have found it!

The thing about this is its all done in the name of standardised by-law. I got news for these idiots. The City was built over 200 years and new homes dominated by garages front and centre might be common in the new developments in the north of Scarborough but downtown people have long driveways and garages in the back yard. In Leaside as JetFan says they all converted their garages to living space so now they parking in front of them because a car can't go inside. Point is I don't see a problem where I live so why make a law for the far reaches of Scarborough and apply it to me who lives in post war house 10 minutes from downtown with no parking problems whatsoever!!!

so if you can fit 12 smart cars into your garage, can you have 12 cars in your drive?

We're not allowed to have chicken coops. The next question to be asked is what if you don't have a garage, just a driveway?

When we lived in Agincourt we had a single car garage for mom and only enough room on the driveway for dad's car, so that would be OK. On the other side of the house we put in concrete sidewalk slabs so I could park my car without blocking the narrow street.
I can see the how this will create jobs and revenue for the city because of neighbour complaints. ohmygod.gif

Unless you're 67rag396, then you can park 2 garages....biggrin

We have a bylaw passed in Welland last summer against "unsightly" vehicles ! define that !  If its plated and insured it should be fine, no ???

If someone tells me a 66 beaumont is unsightly-I'll tell them their Kia is unsightly to me.

My old neighbour never said anything but I'm quite sure old cars (licensed) in my driveway were not his preference either-yet for 12 years he had a house trailer in his driveway.

What happened to live and let live !

I'm not saying we should have junk yards-but this is crazy

Man can I ever hear Hillar spouting off about this in my ears.  How in the heck can you guys live in Toronto, or Ontario for that matter?  3 years for me in Ottawa back in the 80's was too much.

We get to kick out Miller on October 25th. The front runner is as far right as they come, seems like everyone has had it with these nutbars now.

here in Stoney Creek cars do not have to be plated or insured but you must prove they start and move. All around me there is car guys and we all have had the city down on us because of complaints from new home owners streets over. My garage on the side of the house holds 3 and the one out back holds 6 so I guess I can have 9 in the driveway
