More genius politicians....

I just read Saturday's paper tonight.  This has me steaming. Who is the idiot that figured this stuff out?

-Spending my tax dollars to get people to crush their cars.

-Our government insurance auction will no longer sell older than 1995 written off vehicles that used be sold to the public. This means that the 65 Nova SS I bought at auction last year would have just been crushed. It had/has tons of useable parts that can be recycled on a classic car.

-A car dealer will not be allowed to import a car older than 1995 unless it's a "classic". WHY??? Who cares if he does? They get their duties and taxes (exorbitant) when it comes in to Canada.....

-It's getting to the point that the lower income people will not be able to afford what is left for used vehicles available for purchase. They will all be too new/too much$$$

Perhaps they should sell pre-95s on a salvage title only, parts only... Interesting about the new restrictions, are they proposed or passed? There was a shift after 95 for improved emissions...

They will do everything they can to perpetuate the Great Green Lie, which like Santa Claus is a carefully marketed fairy tale to sell more products that will enrich those that the system underwrites.  We are a disposable culture because we are legislated that way, which is why we're losing our ability to take care of ourselves (most people wouldn't have a clue how to fix a thing).  Creativity is dead and pride in ownership and workmanship is taken from us just as China's rules for private ownership are relaxing.  (So who's going in the wrong direction here?)  The thing to remember is that lousy politicians fail only if their leadership is ignored.  The way to do that is to take what's good and keep it underground and out of sight until it has its day again.  It's disobedience but its also self preservation.  That's how the Wolstead Act was busted and that's why we still have a fine alcohol producing industry to this day.  Resist the chain.  Amen.

Bill Blaikie hopes to send more 1995-and-older vehicles to Manitoba scrap yards in an effort to help the environment.

Bill Blaikie hopes to send more 1995-and-older vehicles to Manitoba scrap yards in an effort to help the environment.

Motorists have until the end of this month to take advantage of a $2,000 provincial government rebate on the lease or purchase of hybrid vehicles.

Conservation Minister Bill Blaikie said Friday the province believes its money will be better spent getting high-polluting beaters off the street.

CASH FOR CLUNKERS

Donors of 1995-and-older vehicles will now get $440, the extra $140 courtesy of the provincial government.

Instead of subsidizing the acquisition of shiny new hybrid electric vehicles, the Manitoba government will top up a popular federally funded program run by the Manitoba Lung Association that pays owners $300 to turn their rust buckets into scrap metal. Donors of these 1995-and-older vehicles will now get $440, the extra $140 courtesy of the provincial government.

At a Transcona vehicle recycler, where an old sport utility vehicle was crushed for the benefit of media cameras, Blaikie also announced Manitoba Public Insurance will halt the practice of reselling pre-1995 vehicles that have been written off -- unless they are purchased back by the owners. Currently, those vehicles can be resold at auction and repaired. The government will introduce a regulation later this year to prohibit car dealers from importing vehicles manufactured before 1995. So-called "classic cars" will be exempt from the restriction.

The new measures are expected to take 1,300 polluters off the road each year. Blaikie said the government is acting on the advice of the Manitoba Vehicle Standards Advisory Board. It is co-chaired by auto dealer Larry Vickar and MPI president Marilyn McLaren and includes representatives from environmental groups.

"Environmental and industry experts told us Manitobans would be better served with a program that ensured that vehicles which produce the most greenhouse-gas emissions are retired and replaced by newer, cleaner-burning vehicles, which can be vehicles other than hybrids," Blaikie said.

Since the rebate program's inception nearly four years ago, 1,600 hybrid vehicles have been licensed for use in Manitoba. The Manitoba Lung Association is pleased with the provincial boost to its Retire Your Ride program. The provincial subsidy will be paid to participants who choose the rebate or opt for a bus-pass or bike-purchase subsidy.

The program's future is uncertain, however, as Ottawa has said it will withdraw funding March 31.

Kate Letkemann, the lung association's environment co-ordinator, said the organization hopes to continue to recycle vehicles and is looking for other sources of funding. Blaikie said Friday he hopes Ottawa reconsiders its decision to pull out of the program.

They certainly are doing their best to ensure our kids will not be able to continue the old car hobby....

Never mind the guys who make money recycling old car parts and producing/selling restoration parts.

It's marketing Carl.  If the old durable beasts are eliminated and we're forced to rely on the fall aparts, we'll buy more vehicles, spend more on repairs and keep the political campaign coffers lined from greatful dealers everywhere.  I can still remember taking care of my little Acadian all by myself when I was 18.  All repairs done in driveway.  I look under the hood of my Hyundai now and it looks like an alien autopsy.

Oh thank God that the government is going to save me. It is amazing that anyone is alive who rode in or was near a gross polluting 1960s car.

Im being sarcastic.

Why the hell does government need to be so fing big, so self serving, so controlling? It doesnt, but people seem to be getting accustomed to the idea that government is necessary to take control of every aspect of our lives. To hell with looking after ourselves.
Now that is scary!

The average person thinks a 1995 car is old. The average person does not properly maintain or take care of their vehicles hence they cause unnecessary polltion and generally look like junk.

The minority like people on here do take care of their cars and truck, do make sure thye meet emmissions and licensing standards, do maintatin their appearance and mechanical condition. DO NOT contribute to excessive pollution.

Yesterday I was out and met a guy I know with an newer Accura. He stopped beside me in the parking lot and asked me when I got the NEW Cadillac, "must be nice to get a brand new Caddy, looks awesome" he said. I didn't tell him it was my daily driver 1998 Deville.

This just goes right along with someone telling you how many cars you can park in your driveway...

Hmmm, so theres people in Toronto that may mistake a 12 year old Caddy for something expensive too-thought we went through this last year at this time and "everyone" knew they were old and worthless

Yep, we need the government to save us from ourselves by crushing these "environmentally unfriendly" old vehicles.disbelief

Seems to me that more pollution is created through building a new one than keeping an old one on the road.  But no politician ever seems to touch on that issue.  They just market the "green" idea to us to serve other purposes..... *cough* economy *cough*.

Don't even get me started on selling food from China in our grocery stores!
...I noticed in the supermarket last week, when I read the label on a package of frozen fish from good ol' Capt. Highliner hisself.... "Product of China".  What?!  You mean to tell me that here I live within a stone's throw of the Atlantic Ocean and Sobeys (a company based in NS, no less) is selling fish that was "grown" in China (probably in polluted waters, since they don't appear to have any environmental standards over there - they just grow the economy at all costs), packaged and frozen in China, kept frozen while it is shipped from China to Canada, who's fishing industry has been struggling for years...

What is "green" about that?  The money (well, 20s in Canada).

If the government really cared about the environment and the health and well-being of their people they would ban crap like that and forget about penalizing people on a budget or people who like to fix their own stuff - stop spending taxpayers' money to crush old cars.

Arghh!!  FWIW, I buy my fish fresh from the local fisherman's market....

You watch guys! All these Asian carp that are flying out of the water all over the place and threatening entry into the Great Lakes will soon be marketed as ASIAN BASS! Some dork down in California has already started this practice. He said he couldn't put it on the menu as Asian carp
because then people would be turned off by it if they knew what it REALLY was. False menu; false labeling on food products; how much melamine and lead is in all this CRAP that gets sent from China? But then again, WHO is it looks after the FOOD & DRUGS? The SAME frickin' doorknobs thereof known as POLITICIANS!! Don't get ME started or yuz'll be here ALL NIGHT! hahahaha!
