428 Origins

The 428 is derived from the 421-ci V-8 that debuted in 1961 as Pontiac's Super Duty version, and was used in NASCAR stock car racing...

Long Journal

The 421 and the 428 were the first of Pontiac's big "long journal" V-8s, with the 421 featuring large 3.25-inch main journals, a 4 3/32-inch bore and 4-inch stroke....

Bigger is Better

The 421 was produced until 1967, when the 428 debuted with a larger 4 ¼-inch bore and the same size stroke and main journals.

Slight Changes

Pontiac stopped using steel crankshaft in 1961 and shifted to cast iron, but used a stronger alloy in the cast iron for the 1969 428.....

Short-Lived

The 428 was only available in large Pontiacs, and a few were factory installed in GTOs and Firebirds before being replaced for 1970 by the 455.....
