Summons to Juror.. Yay....

I got a Summons to Juror today. I go Nov 8, 9am. I understand this first step is an all day ordeal. Greeaattt. If I get picked we'll have a REALLY hard time making ends meet since I'm the only one working in my family. I hope I can plead my case and get excused. I read all the paperwork and it sounds like you may get excused AND postponed to another time. I don't see another time with things changing unless I win the lotto. Why should my family and I suffer because some idiot committed a crime? I'm all for doing my civic duty, but not if it causes me financial hardship. I wonder how a politician would feel if he lost 2 weeks of income. Oooh, they'll give me 40 bucks a day after 10 days and $100/day after 50 days. That doesn't cut it.. 80% of my wage is commission. November and early December is our busiest time of year due to snow tire sales and I may miss out.. no
Since I'm the top advisor, I am going to see if I can get a letter from work explaining they need me there.

Todd I know a fellow that was in the same predicament and when the defense lawyer asked him a leading question he responded that " hanging was too good for him ", he was immediately dismissed. Just a thought.

if u didnt sign for it by registered mail, theres no way to know u ever got
it in the first place, it saves money sending them regular mail, but no way to
prove  u got it or not, so its possible to skip the whole thing, just a thought

The best way out is as has been mentioned, provide some flippant "out there" answer and they won't want you. However, when i was called up, i chickened out and only spoke the truth and ended up serving. my employer nicely kept on paying as if I working!

You can get off by getting a letter from your doctor. In my case my hearing in one ear is only about 25% . Also if it is causing you anxiety that will work. This has worked for me twice now. Now that I am retired I could do it but would miss testimony with the hearing problem.

I got called up. Wrote a letter detailing the allergy problems I have with scents, fragrances, etc. Went on and on about how I could not concentrate, would probably fall asleep etc etc. (All true, by the way).

Last I heard from them.

Wasn't John Grisham who wrote something about how someone's fate is decided by 12 people who weren't clever enough to get out of jury duty.

Don't think your financial hardship thing is going to work. Might need to be more creative without being deceptive.

Todd    write the note regarding hardship, and you will be OK

I stood up, and pointed at accused, and said "Hang him", and they escorted me to the door...

I have never been called in my 49 years. The wife was a jury forman on a murder case in Durham region about 2 years ago. She was even sequestered for a week. My youngest son was called, and he was only 19 at the time. They didnt choose him. If you get picked to go before the crown and defence lawyer just make a racist comment, and I gaurentee they will pass you by.
Good luck,
Roger

The last time I got called up in 1990, there wasn't a particular case that I was to be a juror for.
The first case they called me up on, was about my neighbour next door's daughter who'd been sexually assaulted at her job. I said to them that being these people WERE my neighbours, there was NO WAY I could be impartial! So I was told to sit down. The next case came up and the guy had longer hair than I did (and mine was pretty long at the time) and he had tattoos everywhere except his face. A real bad-ass looking dude to say the least. I went up, stood where I was supposed to stand, looked him up and down like he was THE biggest piece of dirt on earth and right away for SOME reason, his lawyer said, "We'd like to pass on this potential juror PLEASE your honour" and with that, I was TOTALLY excused and not asked to hang around the rest of the day. Worked fer me anyways. Go for the hardship story Todd! Lord KNOWS you and Connie have had A LOT on yer plates this last little while. It's not just a tale to get out of doing it, but THE
GOD'S HONEST TRUTH!
