Thinking of getting a Suburban or Yukon???

Hey gang, I'm thinking about a Suburban or Yukon 06 To 08 or there abouts. Want a 2whl. drive but all the dealers are saying "good Luck" everybody's going 4X4 & 2 whl. drives don't exist??? Also are saying 4.8 or 5.3's are scarce but 6.0 is the way to go???  I have a 01 Siverado ext. a cab, 4.8V8 thats good on gas [22 to 24 mpg] 2 whl. drive. Are these sales people givin me the gears to sell me something I don't want????

I have a '03 Avalanche with the 5.3L and IT is 2 wheel drive,, rare as heck ! lucked into it. THey share the same chassis as the Suburban. great ride, decent on fuel and lots of power for towing ( towed a 21' trailer at 7000 lbs over the Rocky Mountains )

IF I drive nice,, I can get 23 mpg. that's a Imperial gallon......

We love our Sub, I don't drive it much as my wife uses it as her daily so her light foot gets decent mileage. It is a 99 Vortec 5.7 we have had since new. It is good for 1,100 km per tank about 160 litres full.

I would agree that 2 wheel drives are almost non existent in Ontario.  I sure wouldn't go smaller than the 5.3 and would lean to the 6.0 but again where are you going to find a 2 wheel drive 6.0 Suburban, maybe in Texas.

I've got an 02 escalade (same platform) with the 6.0L and a 01 sierra with the 4.8, they get really close to the same mileage about 2mpg difft around town and 1mpg difft on the highway. But the 6.0L has the right amount of power the truck is a little weak. When towing the 4.8 is TERRIBLE on fuel and pretty much always in 2nd or 3rd to keep up speed, the 6.0 dosn't even notice my boat and the milage isn't that bad. That being said they are great vehicles, I've got 160,000 on both and really had no significant problems.

No such thing as a 2wd around calgary though, and I doubt there are many in Canada. Even when I'm in Southern California visiting the inlaws there are mostly 4x4's which is totally a waste, but people buy em up!!

FOR DAILY DRIVING MY '02 SILVERADO WITH 4.8 IS FINE, BUT EVEN WITH AN EMPTY CAR HAULER, IT'S JUST A LAME DOG. IT DOES NOT TAKE ANY KIND OF LOAD WELL.hmm

I rarely use the 4 wheel drive. What is useful is auto trac which works to transfer power to the wheels that need it that plus second gear start and the big Sub ploughs through most drifts.

Just be careful when you have it in Auto and don't drive for long distances with it if you don't need it........ Lots of burnt clutches. Be sure to service it regular as well especially if you do use the auto function!!!

Oooooh, that may explain why I have had two transfer cases since 1999. confuse I better tell my wife who drives it daily.

Why does auto trac eat up clutches?

WE LOVE our 2007 LS 4x4  5.3 all aluminum V4/V8
Truck runs 24 mpg (Imp gal)  and run 20 mpg going to N.B. loaded, at 75-80 mph.
Wife loves  it   4x4 runs nice here in snow country
When I bought it, I honest to goodness, did not know, it was 4x4..
Runs smooth and quiet..  Had 42K on it in March 08,  Now has 90,000 km..
bought a battery, and changed the oil....    buy one....   you will love it...................

My 01 siverado pulls the car trailer just fine with the 4.8 matter of fact tomorrow I have to deliver a farm tractor w/ frt. end loader to near Lindsay. Picked it up there on Tues to take it to repair shop for the owner. Had a 74 GMC b-4 w/5.7 [350] & it didn't pull near as well. 01 has 3:42 gears out back & hauls A$$ Found a 05 Denallia at dealer, full load 4X4 6.0 but has 134000 km.s on it. My 01 has 144kms, so for 20 grand I gain 10,000 kms?? HHMMM!!!!

How about trying to find a truck on the lot with an 8 foot box? Everybody has a car with a wheel barrow on the back now for a p/u.

my 02 Yukon 5.3 hauled weight very well but I hated the death raddle ( piston slap ) Would not want one with out the 4x4. Not so much the 4x4 but the low range when moving heavey trailers in the yard or sticking the Jet skis in the water.

These thing are "tough" to find!!! Checked AutoTrader for 100Km Toronto area 6 came up all "high Km's Found a Caddy "escalade "[ long wb one ] a 08 fully loaded, near here, for "only" $ 45000 most of the others were 07to 09's & around the 32grand & up!!! I may go look at the escalade, as I only drove by it & saw it on the lot & read the sign in window, thought it was one of those "short" P/up's like an Avalanche [ use less ] but then I saw it was the "long" suburban back end!!!! Doesn't cost anything to "go look" & the "BLACK" with CHROME rims is calling me back!!! " Pete, come look at me, you'll like me"

Geez, I am late on this one............. Well, in auto, the clutches are partially applied to allow a quicker apply when needed. You still have that hesitation before they lock but none to less still slipping past each other....!

Ya my wife drives it in auto the second a flake hits the road, not going to do that anymore. I could always smell the clutch material after it was driven that way. Last replacement was this time last year and all is good so far.

Not only that, but the front axle is always engaged as well. Have seen lots of front axles puke oil because of this as well. If you want 4wd over long distances, within reason, 4Hi should be used. Auto is ok around town.

That being said, repair shops will hate me as they will lose business. But I do this for my own customers as well. I do try to save them money especially when it is needless!!!

Sounds like a nice truck Pete, you've got 7 or 8 years until you hit 160,000 km.

congrats, you'll love it! I think the 6 speed trannies had some problems when they first came out in 2006. I'm sure they are ironed out by now.
