If you saw the thread a while back, you recall all 94 and older vehicles that go through our salvage auction (government run auto insurance here)- are now branded as "irrepairable".
Here's a perfect example of a car that shouldn't be.
What a great project car this could have been for a young kid to buy and fix up as a first car.....

How can we encourage kids to buy old cars and fix them when they do ignorant stuff like this?
I've been going to the Autopac auction since I was about 14. I got started at it when my older brother took me. Every car crazy kid should have a chance at something like this. It's one of the most affordable ways to get in to an old car.
Stuff like this irks me...

I know what you mean, I stopped in to local wreckers, as they had a "real" clean Suburban sitting out front, owner said " Pete, I can't sell it, was taken in on Gov. program, I have to scrap it" !!! What a waste of a great vehicle, no body rot, ran A-1 I forgot to ask if they can sell parts or if it has to be crushed?? Another example of "Premier DAD" [ McGOOFY] looking after us & protecting us from each other JEEZ Go Away & leave us Alone

That is what is so frustrating. Lost provincial sales tax that would have been paid on repair parts as well. Lost revenue for the body integrity inspector, the shop that does the safety inspection, so on and so on and so on.....

Funny how legislation changes shortly after "automaker bailouts" and all of the sudden society is being pushed towards new vehicles! This is sounding too much like communism. Very sad that the govt got involved with free enterprise. Our hobby is definately going to be forced underground in the future at this rate. Lately, just about every car magizine in North America has a write up about hot rodding being banned in the near future. Enjoy your toys well you can guys.
Canada is buying CO2 credits... MPI is getting a kickback from the government to retire polluters. It's costing Millions.... Billions? so they like to keep it a little quiet so the few honest taxpayers left don't revolt.

is there any way to fight mpic directly? maybe somebody has a lawsuit started against them for pushing their weight around on manitobans? the immobilzer program might be fine winnipeg but out where i live it's not needed yet we are forced to install them in some vehicles or you cant put plates on it, and now i cant buy a write off older than 1995 to repair it? parts only... thats dum, they write off vehicles that old even if they only need a bumper or something minor put on or repaired..
and another thing, autopac sells a immobiler to garage now for i think 220 dolllars and the shop isn't allowed to mark it up.. i know it gets sold back to them but still should be ABle to make a little money on parts
We quit installing immobilizers a couple of years ago. In some cases it seemed we were better off to have a tech standing around than working on those things. No regrets giving that business up and I hear it's not getting better!

Just a little box that is wired in with all the same coloured wires (to prevent it being hacked) that disables the car. I know it eliminates the crank circuit, not sure if it does more (fuel, spark). It has a little tab that hangs on your keychain and in there is a "chip" (not a very good term for what it actually is, likely) that the black box has to sense before it allows starting.
Good idea I guess but we've had some no-starts caused by these things and when the owner is "immobilized" you can imagine how that goes...

it contains 3 relays, loop a, b, c. the tags are then removed from the wires. the transponder needs to be within a foot to close the circuits. usually fuel, ignition and starter.

The shops make GOOD money on the immobilizer installs... no need to rape us on marking up the box too ?? In the end we pay for all of it in our insurance premiums.

Hey guys, if I could back up a bit here........it truely is a shame that your provincial govt./insurance operations has this program to dispose of pre-1995 vehicles. We are blessed here in Alberta indeed. But, I think all Canadian provincial/federal transportation agencies need to spend thier energy and attention to a growing problem. That being the importing of these crappy used right-hand drive asian so-called "Rice-Rockets" and off beat SUV's. i'm seeing more of these everyday around here. One in ten are in decent shape. The rest spew smoke into the air, are battered and usually driven by someone with very little experience controlling a vehicle with controls on the right hand side. Here we are trying to preserve our on-shore N/A built vehicles (some in prestine shape to begin with) and there seems to be a floodgate open somewhere allowing other country's smoking rejects. The government seems to turn a blind eye once again to our own here.........

What's wrong with going underground? The bathtub gin business undid ten years of American social policy (it was called prohibition) and we girls even got the vote after years of bitching and moaning. The hobby won't go anywhere as long as true preservationists continue by whatever means necessary. It's not that we want to keep polluters on the road, we want to preserve a unique part of history. That's the message.
Now, not that I am agreeing with MPI......but. I have seen very similar vehicles that looked like this same car but were far from repairable upon closer inspection. I saw a '95 car ten years ago that was so rotten I would have failed it in the dark! As an inspector I shudder having to inspect a rebuilt older vehicle. As a rebuilder, I have pulled roofs off of 2 yr. old vehicles with as low as 15,000km and rust was already starting in the pinchwelds! Yet I admire all the work that all of you are doing to your projects. I see a glitter of chrome in the bush and start thinking possibilities. The projects we are working on today were the parts cars twenty years ago. The guys in the southwest states crush old cars down there because they are deemed unrestorable, but would make us drool up here as an easy project. I hate to say it but we can't save them all even though we would like to. |If someone bought this car, repaired it, and tried to sell it, they would be lucky to make TENS of dollars. Look at the positive, alot of pristine parts for your project, cheap!

lol. the only way to make money installing immobilizers is to do lots of them and have no screw ups. the only good thing is that your guaranteed to get payed from mpic. i've personally installed around 500-600 of these things ...just bought a box of 12 immobilezers from mpi for close to 2700 plus tax and dont get to make a dime off them

Man, what a PITA those immobilizers are! Luckily they aren't mandated here in Ontario however I've had lots of experience dealing with customers who couldn't get their car started because of them. Are they really helping against theft?
Amazingly teh immobilizers do work for the winnipeg(which is a unique car theft situation)
at our bodyshop we use to fix at least 2-3 stolen cars a week(mostly 90s dodge caravans and early 90s GM cars/trucks)
Now we are lucky to see 1 every few months.

I AGREE 100%, These so called imports, are nothing more than Junk that some other country doesn't want, so they ship them to Canada, just like they do with the people they don't want

I don't think I'd go as far to call the JDM right hand cars junk. We see a lot of them come in at work and they are usually completely rust free and have low kms. Japan has stricter rules regarding "older" cars and they tax them heavily. Because of this the average citizen over there can't afford to keep it and they sell cheap. Sounds like what the gov't here is trying to do to us old car owners, doesn't it? I've seen '91 Landcruisers with 53000 orig kms imported from Japan that look like new. Having that attitude towards those cars is the same that some people have against ours. Hopefully the day doesn't come when we end up selling our cars cheap to someone in another country that has more lenient laws regarding older cars.
