Car Insurance

Okay, I'm not going to start on this classic car insurance again.
But check this out.

My insurance is currently $350+ a month. living in Mississauga, 5000km a year.
Now check this out.

If I moved to Ingersoll, Ontario. and drove 10 000kma year!
Insurance would cost $220 a month!

Unfrickenbelievable!

And if you moved to Clinton, 50 miles north of London  you'd pay $110.00

Said it before I'll say it again. SGI is probably the one of the best insurance companies in Canada. I'm under a thousand/year for my Equinox and you don't want to know what I pay for my classics. As a tradesman I got paid fairly for what I did as well.

Guys, the quotes I gave above are for my daily driver- Cadillac. I just wanted to show how much they fluctuate based on a postal code/area.

If I were to bring in the classic cars.
They wanted $10 000 a year for the Riviera. In Ontario, drivers under 23 can not drive a classic car unless, its a daily driver insurance policy or illegally.

Carl- I would move to Clintonbiggrin, If I could find a job down there. Any small town is good for me.

Jonathan, I highly recommend you start calling around. Even if you are working on the car now, start calling and asking. They will still give you a quote, but won't be pleasant. And some won't quote at all.And will be frustrating.

I had two cars (the 71 Ford and the 68 Riv), and was unsuccessful for finding reasonable insurance for them. all over 5 grand a year! I tried 10+ companies, and even listed the companies in another thread.

Like I said, Try calling around first! Doesn't hurt and this way you will know! Maybe you'll have better luck in finding a company.

This is what made me sell my classic cars.

you may not be able to classic specific insurance without a "regular" car under a normal type insurance policy, I have several cars old and new insured with
state farm, in sveral different ways, some of my classic cars with them have special
insurance with very specific do/donts for using the car, very reasobable$ but restrictive! I have a couple classic cars insured like regular cars, more $$ but
i can drive them as i like, then just leave fire and theft on them during the winter.
bringing down the price, i know that if they got wrecked, stolen , i wouldnt get
enough $$ for them from insurance, so i dont spend a fortune on them, its a balance
between affordable, being legal and driving when and what i want, the
long and short of it is, unless you move(or say u did) go under someone elses
insurance, until u turn 25 you are gonna pay alot,

i went through this when i was younger, i had 72 olds insured as a regular car,
with the cheapest insurance i could find, and got lucky it never got smashed or stolen
but it was all i could afford, the car was nice, but not that nice so it was ok

my father in law owned an insurance broker company for years and he couldnt always get better prices for me, shop around often was his advice

Yes, we like small town life here in Ingersoll. If you found work here and lived here you might not even need a car. Jetfan, there's a nice funeral home around the corner from us. They were amazing when my father in law died.
I got 1600 sq feet of living space on a 200 foot deep lot for under 150k.. Try that in the GTA (or Calgary or Vancouver)..

Insurance companies are not your friend, its all about making money. In Ontario the law says you must have insurance but few people reflect on what this means. It means Liability insurance. You don't have to have collision or comprehensive coverage just liability. If you buy only mandatory insurance, say $1,000,000 liability you can obtain a low monthly premium. If you are willing to accept the risk of having no collision or comprehensive insurance or at the least very high deductibles for these coverages you may be better off. Ask the insurer what the highest deductible they offer is and get a premium comparison on that.

If you have a loan on your vehicle, there will usually be a requirement for specific minimum coverage.
I ran my daughter's car for 4 years without collision or comprehensive. It was a $3,000. car so I didn't care. I ran my 68 Cutlass on regular insurance, no collision or comprehensive so that I had no usage restrictions.
I only insure those things that I can't afford to cover myself.

I'm with "LANT" Silver Wheels for the 64,I've never had an issue with restricksions on driving the car other than ,not to work or not on Vacation?? I call them every time I go to the states for a show or convention & all the say is " are you going to a car show or car related event" answer YES, & it's "have a good time" I'd be very dissappointed if I was restricked to the # on Mi. I could do over the season. I did well over 7000 this season, including 2 trips to West Virginia, June & Oct. & a cruise in every night of the week + a show on the wknd. HELP ME I'm in "withdrawl" now!!!!

Ray's got it exactly right again and what I was going to try and say but even better!.

The big question I have is how in today's world of rights and no discrimination based on sex can insurance companies get away w/ charging more to insure a 16 year old male driver than a female?.
Understandable if age, experience etc are factored in but shouldn't sex having an impact be wrong and the cost to carry risk by sex shared by everyone regardless of being male or female?.

Like anything in life you need to educate yourself. the person on the other end of the phone lives and breaths this stuff so try and get on the same playing field. Ghost is right, he should delete his post!!

I just added a 4th car to my policy and so far my son has been a occasional driver on the policy, now with 4 cars they say he is principle on one car so they do some BS and come up with a new premium of $5,800 for the newly acquired Oldsie alone. (To be Frank, the insurance was a real factor in deciding whether to accept this car. It was offered to me in June and finally I said what the heck it's to good to let go.)

Ok I say, do you have an hour to figure this out? So I get my policy out and we go over the entire thing with a fine tooth comb, I get quotes on every combo of principle and occasional drivers and deductibles I can think of and we finally settle at $419 per month for the fleet. Two Cadillacs, a Suburban and an Olds 5 drivers three with driver training certs.

The other thing the public is ignorant of is you don't have to use your insurance if you don't want to. I have had many small bumps and whatnot that I just repaired or had the other party pay for. So many people just pick up the phone and call.

Everyone knows the industry is rot with issues, why else is the first question the body shop asks is "Is this on Insurance?" Geez...$1,500 on Insurance and $300 cash to me...What is that???? and we all know it goes on.

Probably more the case of estimates using costs to replace w/ factory parts then actually using aftermarket parts and/or used or sometimes even repairing existing parts especially painted panels..

Mark up on labour and time to do the job.
Make it look worse than it actually is.
If part can be re used, they will re use it.

a 30 minute job is suddenly marked up as 8 hours of labour.
