1965 Beaumont SD "Cheetah"

I have what I believe is a 65 Cheetah. It has all the ordered Cheetah options and was sold by Bill Conroy in Vancouver BC. It still has it's Cheetah talbot miiror intact and was originally a 300 HP 4spd car with a vinyl top like a Z-16 Chevelle. At first I wasn't going to post the car but I need some help documenting such a car. Alot of the early cheetahs were trim only I understand and not motor swap cars. What do you guys think about this car being such a beast? Does anybody have a contact from Conroy with some info to help? The car is coming apart as we speak and is on it's way to new floors, trunk, etc.

I just removed the front end and the fender with the mirror. It is the original SD fender from this car and the talbot mirror looks untouched.

Well, i will be watching this closely.  Very interesting!

Odd place to mount the mirror on such a "sporty" car tho.

All i can suggest is get the docs from George Zapora on this one for sure!

I have them but they make no reference to the Cheetah but it is confirmed as a 300 HP 4spd Conroy car. The mirror is mounted like a 64 Lemans mirror. They also have fender mount mirrors. I researched the mirror and it is the same as a 65 AC cobra car so the mirror is period correct.

congratulations on your  purchace , i think you have good grounds in your idea in this being a early cheetah or a forunner of the idea of one!

this is the only 65 Beaumont that has surfaced to us so far ,with a vinyl top (plus it being from conroy) and a L74 Sport Deluxe /4 speed factory car.
its always been in my mind since it was added to the registry

your correct with the gm docs if it was converted somehow by them gm would have no knowledge of it.

either way its a great rare car by itself.

Cool. Other than not having the knowledge, the space, the time, and the talent I would love to do something like this!
I hope you keep posting updates. I'm looking forward to them...

I matched the upper holes with the stock SD trim but somebody had something mounted where the V-8 emblem would of been. I wish I had a Conroy emblem to see if it matches up.

Is this the car from the registry that showed up from the east, a year or so ago? Pretty cool either way....is the numbers match engine with it?

So far I have what I consider a numbers correct 65 300HP manual trans 327 motor but it doesn't match the suffix numbers from the GM documentation. I'm really curious if the original motor was gone at the GM dealership with a car like this?

All I ment is that most chevelles that you see with a vinyl top were Z-16's. High performance cars. Conroy ordered his cheetah cars a certain way and he put vinyl on them too. It's a rare option in 1965.

Sure looks like it - if you look at thr picture on the registry you can see the same funky rearview mirrior on the drivers fender, and the same pattern water/rust staining on the passenger side 1/4.

- 65SSSD I think the seller's name was Barry Miles, what was he like to deal with, I've heard different opinions. I had a friend of mine check this car out and decided to pass on it on his advice.

I have been in contact with Barry for over 3 years and he was fine to deal with. A straight forward deal. If you didn't know what the car was or could be (Cheetah), and didn't have good access to a few 65 Beaumonts as donors you normally wouldn't touch such a project. All the trim I got with this car is a throw away to boot and no SD rocker chrome. If the numbers motor did exist for this car I wonder who has it? I also transported a truck and a motor for him from the west so the deal was mutual. I have Clear title for the car too. I ran a title check in BC considering it was a BC car originally and it came up clear title to Nova Scotia also. A straight forward deal for sure. I didn't want any problems.

Yes, my decision was based partly on the fact that I didn't have a few donor 65's to aid in the resto. ( You shouldn't have any problem there!smile)
I'm glad this car is going to be brought back, and I hope it turns out to be a cheetah!

the cheetah emblems have 2 studs on the back for mounting, my 66 cheetah had the cheetah emblem behind the front wheel because of the 427 cross flags that were mounted under the beaumont emblem in frount of the frount wheel, so maybe the 65 had the emblems mounted were the v8 was???

That's what I'm thinking now too. I looked at some old pictures of cheetahs and the spacing looks the same. It looks like they used the one outer V-8 hole and drilled another for the other pin. Do you know what the pin measurement is? This could vary emblem to emblem but it's a shot in the dark. I wouldn't of thought this car would have Cheetah emblems but the holes were a good clue. That was a good lead.

Someone probably asked this before,   Is there anyone around from the Conroy days?  owners?  employees?

With that list of equipment,
and proof of what Conroy, did later, with the Cheetah cars,
I sure would restore it, with the presumption, that it was a early Cheetah....Certainly can be a 1 of 1

That's really what it comes down to for me. It's a beauty of a car as a stock SD Beaumont, but it would be a shame to restore it as this if it's a Cheetah. I don't want to wreck the car and restore it incorrectly. It's a good possibility that it is the real deal. What do you think? Would you restore it as a stock  65 SD 300HP 4spd or a 65 SD 4spd Cheetah with the talbot mirror, Cheetah emblems down low on the fender, and 65 Buick rallys?
