An American Chevrolet trivia question

I learned this one looking at cars in US wrecking yards.

What was the one way to guarantee a 3.70 rearend ratio in a 65-70 B body or A body Chevrolet car?

There is a good clue in the question if you know your Chevrolet diffs well.

Also, another good clue knowing it's cars built for sale in the US only.

Think about what option (that affects gear ratio) appears only in US models from 65-70....

Actually, that option was available on older Canadian Chevrolets I think, but not by 1965.

Pay special attention to the fact that it's 3.70 ratio.

Double bingo for the last 2 guys. OD it is!

3.70 gear means 10 bolt only as 12 bolt had 3.73

Overdrive only came with 6 cylinder, 283, or 307 in 65-70 US Chevrolets. I guess it was too weak for any more power than that.

I have never checked what they used in the 64 and older style diffs with OD but I imagine it was similar.

Interesting. In 55-56 the OD cars had 4.11 gears, standard stick shift had the 3.70's (PG had 3.55). Maybe higher highway speeds led to the slightly taller gears in later models?

In 55-56 the Chevies had 15" wheels and 85-series tires (tall & skinny). For 57 the wheels were changed to 14".

Overdrive in the 1960s was not offered on Canadian made Chevy or Pontiac cars.

Air conditioning generally took the rear ratio up to the next higher numerical ratio, although in 1967 - 68 a big block car with air only could be had with a 3.07 ratio regardless of horsepower or trans. Also air conditioning was not factory installed on Canadian Chevelles or Beaumonts until the 1968 models.

The 67-68 B-bodies with AC and a M20 had 3:31 gearing.
The 67-68 B-bodies with AC and a M40 had 3:07 gearing.
The M40 AC cars had gearing options of 2:73 which was considered a economy option, or you could get 3:31 gearing as a performance option.
The AC M20 cars had a 3:55 gearing option which was called the performance ratio. There was no optional Economy gear ratio listed for M20 cars.

The Beaumont parts book has some a/c parts listed for 67 and the assembly manual has it documented on microfiche for 67 models. Do we know for sure it never happened? They certainly did plan it because the drawings are there. I sure have never heard of one with factory air though.

Very nice, 3:31 standard gear with AC and powergilde. Optional gear was 3:55 "performance". No economy gearing option.

There is a note in my specs package from GM that mentioned what the change was specifically for an AC car.  (its the same as 66 Chevy specs)

I'll have to scan it when I can and post it.

Huh. 'Splains why my 67 Corvette with factory air and 427 came with that 3.07 - not much for off-the-line acceloration, but mean on the highway, eh?
